The hostel we were staying did not have availability for one more night so we chose to stay at Portal del sur. Im glad I only stayed one night .The only good thing about this hostel is the location right on the center of B.A everything else is bad !!!. The hostel is an old building that needs work done urgently. We payed 60 dollars for a private room and this looked like crap . Our bed was so uncomfortable the sheets looked nasty the furniture was just old and useless . The bathroom was nasty as well and just the whole building was old and smelly. And the hostel DOES NOT HAVE HEAT! Buenos Aires gets so cold during the winter ,I was waiting for the night to finish to get out there. Its very nosiy too thats why we asked to change rooms. They need to close this hostel and remodeled the whole thing to offer a better service. You will find way better hostels around Buenos Aires ,keep looking around.

Portal del sur is in a good location and is well kept for the price, however there is a bar located within the same building but on another floor (that is not part of the hotel). It starts late at night, and goes until 4am. The staff tried to help by moving us to a room at the back of the hostel (a dorm, even though we had booked a double room) - but even in this new room, with ear plugs the bassy music was too much to sleep. On the other nights we were there, there was no music, but traffic in the street is worse than normal due to poorly maintained cars. Dont get me wrong, the Hostel itself was great - but if you are there to sleep (which is the point of accom, right?) then maybe look somewhere else.

I had booked a private double room through the hostel's website / email contact and had my reservation confirmed twice. During our contact via email they were always very nice and helpful. When we finally got there, i was told that they had overbooked, and they didn't have a room for us. I had printed out all the email messages we had exchanged and showed it to them, argued etc, but all they kept saying was that somethimes that happens, that they were sorry but there was nothing they could do about it. As simples as that. It was about 8-9pm and pouring rain and we had to walk around carrying our luggage in order to find a place to stay.

At first we were very satisfied with this hostel: very nice clean double room with good bed, A/C and cable tv. The bathroom was nice, except for the foam on the toiletseat and the waterflood after a shower. Breakfast was ok for Argentina and was served on the very nice rooftop terrace.
However our opnion changed on fridaynight. There seemed to be a performance of a band every friday on the rooftop terrace. And that was right above our room! The music was so loud that earplugs did not help and it went on for hours. Complaining at the desk did not help. The reaction we got was ´we have this every weekend´. Would have been nice to know before we booked the room, because it was not so cheap. It is the sort of noise you expect in a cheap hostel. So be ware if you want to have a good night sleep.
