“Fine for walking the SanTelmo area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

The hotel is at the edge of the San Telmo area and a long walk to Puerto Madero and Plaza de Maya. Other areas require a taxi or the subway. That is the main reason I gave it an average rating. I prefer hotels that are more walking friendly. As a woman on her own, I also would feel very uneasy about walking the hotel neighborhood after dark.
My room was OK, but not particularly spacious and a two flights up. Towels were big and fluffy. The bath accomodation was not the best for older persons - no handrail. There was free internet and wi-fi in the sitting room, but the wi-fi did not reach my room. There was a lovely patio area, but I was there when it was too hot to enjoy it. The hotel is historic and gives one the feeling of old Buenos Aires, which I liked.
The owners did go out of their way to be helpful and quickly reponded to any requests.
Despite all the rave reviews, this was the first time I was not all that happy about a tripadvisor recommendation.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

A great hotel with great hospitality. The rooms are spacious and clean. We felt very well in 1890 Hotel. Two doors aside is the wonderful restaurant Aramburgo. Don`t miss to dine there!

A very beautiful hotel in which I stayed for 4 nights during my recent trip to Latin America. Actually this was by far the best accommodation I had in terms of elegance and beauty. Everything there is so well chosen. And the service was perfect – two sisters (Caroline and Laura), and the staff. My room was big and with high ceiling, all the room in white, with so nice little details everywhere. The garden is also lovely – something you would not expect when walking in the street - but once entering this paradise everything completely changes. The dining room is probably the best of all, with the books, lamps, pictures – the place to sit and relax (apart from eating). The breakfast was absolutely great, prepared by nice local ladies in a big kitchen. Everything really perfect! The only bad comment I can make is related to the old PC offered to the guests – but in comparison with the rest this is really nothing.

Room Tip: I had the cheapest room (end of the garden) and can only imagine the rooms which are more expensive.

“Lovely B&B and good value - just a bit far from most attractions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

This is more a bed & breakfast than a boutique hotel. Large room felt like an apartment in this beautiful old home. The maid serves a breakfast of fruits, medialunas (croissants), and eggs. Owners are very helpful with bottled water, laundry ($10 a bag), taxis, whatever you need. They used an honest exchange rate.

Don't ask the hotel to do a pick-up at EZE. The remise service kept us waiting at the airport for 25 minutes waiting for the driver, and the hotel owner said there's nothing she can do, as they've not been able to find a good transfer company. Taxi Ezieza or the yellow taxis are cheaper and provide better service. There are a lot of taxis near the hotel on Salta, as there's a cabbie hangout down the street, and we didn't encounter any dishonest cabbies. Going back to EZE, the highway entrance is two blocks from the hotel, so it was a very quick trip. If flying through AEP, something in Palermo will be closer.

This would absolutely get an "excellent / 5-circles" rating if it were just a little closer to the center. It's a blue-collar neighborhood with a university and a lot of car body shops nearby. It's not exactly unsafe, especially because it's just a block off the big street (which are usually pretty safe). A taxi cost us around 30 pesos from Puerto Madero and 20 pesos from Teatro Colon, the nearest big tourist attraction. (Skip the overpriced tango show at Porteno.) San Telmo is a walk of several (long) blocks, which can be a bit menacing after dark. There are two subways within two blocks.

There is an absolutely amazing world-class molecular gastronomy restaurant (Aramburu, currently the #1 restaurant on TripAdvisor) just a few buildings down the street, which you absolutely must go to, as long as a $100 dinner won't break the budget. Think of it this way: it would be $400 in New York, so it's one of BsAs's great bargains!

“Charming place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

1890 Hotel Boutique is intimate and charming. The location is close to two subway stops and it is easy to walk to points of interest with a map. Breakfast was great. I selected the Jacaranda room based on someone else's Trip Advisor recommendation but I would have selected one of the rooms along the patio had I known more.
