“great stay in beautiful hotel”

After some weeks travelling through Argentina, we stayed our last days in Buenos Aires and lived in boquitas pintadas hotel. Our first impression was the best breakfast we got in Southamerica on a nice terrase with a lot of plants (not any dead!) at 2 pm - they serve the breakfast the whole day over! Our room was trendy designed by some local artists and the whole hotel was very clean, not any problem with the toilets or showers. In the close neighberhood you don´t find any tourists, seems to be a normal middle - class -neighberhood, but after 300m you cross the 9 of july and arrive san telmo. The personal is very friendly and helpfully - the have given us the best tips where to go to (excursions and restaurants). (Don´t miss going to the Tigre, to Paso del Toro!) We got a really relaxing stay in Boquitas and even the manager went with us to the police when we got robbed in Palermo.

“This place is a dump!”

The hotel looked great on the website, but the place is a awful! "Boquitas Pintadas," also known as "Youkali Kultur Hotel," was probably funky and cool years ago, but now it is just a rickety building with bad plumbing, bathtub/showers without shower curtains, cracked toilets and sinks, doors that do not close, dirty floors, an old empty mini pool on the roof top, and a terrace full of dead plants and rusted patio furniture. For the amount of money that you pay to stay in this ugly side of town, far from everything, you can stay in a nice 3 star hotel in a central location.

“A Highlight of Our Trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2005

This was one my favorite places in B.A. however, its deffinitly not for everyone. The hotel is old, funky, and rather shabby. However, if you like crazy german art, alternative personality stamped all over everything, great service, and amenities like an old marble bathroom, or private balcony its a fantastic deal. Plus the food in the restrarunt was outstanding and vegitarian friendly. After missing breakfast buffet after breakfast buffet at other hotels we were served 4 trays of pastries and savory delights when we woke up (even after noon), in the privacy or their rooftop garden (including a tiny swimming pool). The location is mediocre, not swank but I never felt threatened, even when we walked around at night. It struck me as a family area.

“Charming and friendly, but.....”

It is very charming, but please know what you are getting into: it's in a dicey part of town (even for me, a former new yorker), and it's a true B&B, not offering the comforts of a real hotel. For people new to BsAs I would not recommend it. If you're into places like the Chelsea Hotel in New York, then it may just be for you. But I would check it out personally before checking in.
