After perusing tripadvisor, I decided to book a room at the Principe Hotel. I was lured in by the US$23/room rate that I read on this website and I told my cab driver almost braggingly what a great deal this was. To my dismay, I found out that singles were actually AR200 (US$50) and doubles AR250 (US$64).
My taxi had unfortunately left so I had a look at the room and decided to stay.
The rooms are quite nice. I appreciated the spaciousness and cleanliness.
What disappointed me was the attitude of some of the staff. Even though it was low season, they refused to give me any kind of discount on their rate. Also, each morning, I would ask for a 2nd cup of coffee. Little did I know that they were keeping tabs on this and that when I would check out, I would be charged AR8 pesos for each cup. I travelled a month in Argentina and these guys were the only ones to charge extra for this.
Another thing I noticed was that the son never lifted a finger when it came to cleaning up or helping with luggage; he just sat there on his computer while the older people (parents?) did all the work. Really not impressed.
In conclusion, I am torn about recommending this hotel. The room was really quite nice but the cost and the attitude forced me to find another hotel on my return to Buenos Aires.
I actually found a hotel that was highly rated on tripadvisor for the same price but the staff were exceptional and there was a computer in the lobby for patrons to use for free. PLUS, guess what, they never charged me for that 2nd cup of coffee in the morning!!
