i just got back from my weeklong trip to BA (december 2011). i went by myself with the purpose of relaxing, eating, and hanging out in the sun. staying here was truly one of the highlights of my trip.
kevin was very communicative over email prior to my trip, helping with my itinerary but also providing valuable info about how to get to/from airport with the least amount of hassle. he arranged for a driver to meet me (about the same cost, if not a bit less, than getting a taxi, and way less hassle than taking the bus) -- no problems whatsoever. i showed up pretty early to the guesthouse but my room was ready, for which i was super grateful. i was in the patio room which was fantastic. no windows and can be a bit dark, but then again, the patio is right there and it was truly great lounging about with a book and a glass of wine here.
breakfast is simple but good. bread, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, etc. there is also a small fridge in the dining area which is great for stashing bottles of torrontes. i loved my morning chats with kevin. he is super knowledgeable about everything, it seems, and it was great talking to him about current events, what to do in BA, his experiences as an expat, etc.
getting around could not be easier. the loria subway stop (line A) is about 1.5 blocks away from the guesthouse front door. this easily gets you to the center of the city where you could transfer to other subway lines if necessary. one day i walked from the guesthouse all the way down to the san telmo weekend festival and back -- if you do this, bring water and a really good pair of walking shoes! fyi, the subway is super cheap - like 25 cents per ride. i never had problems with safety on the subway (or at all in BA for that matter) but definitely keep your possessions close to you.
there is not a ton to do around the guesthouse itself with some exceptions. there are a couple of really nice restaurants just by the subway stop -- sanchez y sanchez (pizza, pasta, salads) and d'amblee (a bit fancier). a few more blocks down the street is las violetas, a beautiful cafe, quite famous, great architecture. about 6 blocks away is a huge mall filled with your standard mall stores. however, it's a great stop if you are walking up to recoleta (about an hour walk to get to recoleta), and has the most amazing art deco interior design. i spent a lot of time staring at the amazing chandeliers in the food court section.
i would happily stay in this guesthouse again and would recommend it highly. if you are interested in art deco, personalized service, a relaxing environment, and good conversation, definitely stay here. if you are the type who needs a pool or gift shop or buffet breakfast, then perhaps not.
