We stayed at Hawksmoor House for three nights and had a great time. The house is beautiful and our room (the White room) was very stylish. The main bedroom was large with doors onto a private terrace. We also had a separate dressing area, small spare bedroom and a large bathroom with a free standing bath and separate shower. When we arrived we were warmly welcomed by two playful dogs and given a brief history of the house whilst being taken to our room.
Breakfast is served at a long communal table which may not suit everyone as the table is quite cosy when full. There is a selection of cereals, breads and pastries and you can also order a cooked breakfast . The pool area only had 6 sun beds but we were always lucky enough to get two. Most people are out and about during the day so tend to spend an hour or so by the pool towards the start or end of the day. You have to drive to surrounding restaurants and so the cheese and meat platter was a very good and tasty way of spending the evening at the house enjoying the ambience, and a perfect way to spend the evening watching the sun set over Table Mountain. There is complementary tea and cake in the afternoon; however a nice touch would be to go round the guests to let them know it is available.
We have been to Cape Town several times and usually stay in central Cape Town but it was nice to spend a few days away from the hustle and bustle and Hawksmoor House is less than an hour from Cape Town but feels a million miles away (although you can hear the motorway). We have stayed in numerous places like this over the years and it really is the staff that makes it special. There are a number of people who work at the house but would have liked to have seen them a bit more during the day when we had questions – and possibly for them to be more knowledgeable about the surrounding area. On one occasion we asked where the best place would be to go for a walk in the surrounding area but didn’t really get any suggestion. They were however all very friendly and welcoming
