“Inhospitable and lack of customer service”

I am not one that writes reviews but I thought my experience with this guest house warrants a public complaint. I booked 2 rooms for 5 nights (total 10 nights). The website indicated that a deposit will be charged with the balance due 15 days prior to arrival. Actually, the owners charged the credit card for the entire amount the day I made the reservation. I estimated that we would arrive at 6:00pm. I received a call about 7:00pm wondering where we were and that the owner had been waiting for me. I apologized and explained that we got caught up in dinner with friends and that we would be there around 10:00. Upon arrival, my colleague and I were met at the door and quickly escorted to our rooms with no explanation of the property or how to make ourselves comfortable. The owner was apparently quite put out that we arrived later than expected. The weather happened to be colder than expected and I did not have any idea how to turn the heater on (I couldn't even find it). When I enquired the next day, the young women serving breakfast (not the owner) explained it was a thin board on the wall. I found the plug for one of these boards and turned it on. The other heater did not work. The next day (after another cold night) I emailed the owner because there was no one around the property and I didn't have an international plan on my phone to see about ways to make the room warmer. I received an email the next day saying yes, they knew the heater was broken and to ask the girl (from the breakfast) to fetch more blankets.

I found this response to be unacceptable for a 4 star guesthouse. There were no other guests at the time, so another room may have been possible or some sort of refund on the room. After two nights of being cold and not receiving any sort of customer service, I decided another guesthouse would be worth the money.

Room Tip: I don't know what the other rooms were like.

“Beautiful House BUT guest room 'tired'”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2011

Stayed for 3 nights with kids and booked the family cottage.
Staff delightful.
Family Cottage is pretty tired.
Walk straight into twin room, quite small with a large wardrobe, fan and bedside tables. Not enough storage to unpack cases.
Door to hall way with access to a toilet and a bathroom (not two bathrooms).
Toilet very stylish, no outside access so there is an extractor, best not to look too closely at that.
Large bathroom, bath, loo, washbasin and large walk in shower.
Tiles in the shower were actually dirty but the loo, bath and wash basin were very clean. The towels are small, threadbare and wrinkled (ie not soft and fluffy). Evidence of black mould on the ceiling, probably because the new looking extractor doesn't work and like the toilet next door there is no window.
Double bedroom is a reasonable size, overlooking the garden and is private. A large wardrobe with shelves, big TV in an old fashioned TV cabinet - no decent channels so really no point having it taking up a large portion of the room. Sherry tray on top of the TV cabinet. Tower fan - states aircon tower in room description on website, but it's a fan. Kitchen area with fridge, well stocked with drinks. Tea, coffee and milk cartons provided. Microwave and kettle. Only 3 coffee cups for 4 of us and no matching glasses for drinks. Have to wash cups and glasses straight away or the ants will invade, we didn't report this and just made sure that we kept all food type products in the fridge which is fair enough.
There is a table and 4 chairs in the kitchen but really the room is too small for this. There is a door from kitchen into the garden - this is good as it means you don't have to keep going through the twin room to access the cottage. Out here is a stone table with 2 stone semi circular seats - pretty well covered in bird droppings.
The pool is a decent size but not sparkling, in fact the day we arrived you could barely see the bottom, it did get clearer but not enough to get me in it.
4 sunbeds by the pool - they are very nice, large umbrellas too however the matresses on the sunbeds are left out at night and were a bit mouldy. Pool towels are provided.
The garden is a bit neglected, at the front of the house the paving is overgrown with grass.
The walk into Stellenbosch is a good 25 mins, unless of course we have missed some sort of short cut. No pavements until you pass the university but luckily the roads are reasonably quiet traffic wise.
I can only comment on the family cottage as I did not see any other guest rooms, the public areas in the house are lovely. The staff were very nice, however had limited local knowledge.
I suspect the standards at the 5 seasons have dropped over a period of time, unfortunately I don't think that it would get a 4 star rating if reassessed which is a real shame. All it needs is a bit of attention to detail, housekeeping monitored, the pool and garden taken care of and some general updating (flat screen TV in both rooms??, new kitchen??).
Until these issues were addressed I would not recomment the 5 Seasons, despite helpful staff and the beautiful house.
I have given 3 stars because of the staff and main house otherwise it would have been 2 stars.

Great place! Staff and owners fluent in English and German. Great value, comfort. Close to the town centre and still quiet and peaceful. Great start to our honeymoon

“Good value, beautiful neighborhood - friendly helpful proprietor.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2011

Lovely Dutch cape house in beautiful garden setting. Very attentive and friendly staff. Very adequate breakfast. Walk to town is about 20 minutes (good exercise) and lovely streets and areas around the university. Africa suite comfortable, attractive but steep stairs to sleeping loft. Small pool.
Complementary sherry in room upon arrival and cash mini-bar. Many wines available for purchase.

“Owner did not feel us welcomed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2010

This nice house in a beautiful area of Stellenbosch was the picture perfect to decide on the booking. We arrived on Christmas Eve. Were greeted by a young lady who showed us the room. It seems that to maximize space, room are actually with outdoor entrance from the parking, to the pool, to the breakfast area. In other words, it creates the feeling that there is no business or reason to actually enter the house. In fact one afternoon we wanted to enjoy the living room, but it was closed. Owner did not greet us, did no say thanks. Although rooms are nice and spacious, one can hear anyone talking and service from the owner is questionable
