We stayed at Grande Roche for two nights in January 2012. The location of the property is truly exquisite - the views at breakfast from Bosman's restuarant are truly breathtaking. Upon arrival you are met at your car by a representative of the hotel who welcomes you and offers you a refreshment - I think this is a really nice touch. The porters - actually everyone who helped us at the hotel - all seemed so happy and like they genuinely enjoyed what they were doing!
Our sommelier - Josephine - was truly outstanding and the best sommelier we have ever had in any of the properties we have stayed at around the world. Her honesty, attitude and sense of humour were magnificent and her knowledge and ability to make you excited about the wines she was telling you about was amazing. She is truly one in a million and an asset to Grande Roche.
One of our waiters was truly amazing too - Imran. So friendly and always with a joke or a story to tell us at breakfast or dinner. What a pleasure.
Bosman's is absolutely out of this world and I really think that the food rivals Makaron (at Majeka House) and The Greenhouse (at Cellars Hohenort). The wine pairing was sensational and the food absolutely stunning. To warn you, the kitchen sometimes takes a while, so be prepared for a long, leisurely dinner...which is absolutely wonderful and relaxing when you're on holiday.
The hotel manager - Ms Anja Bosken - was very visible throughout our stay and came up to us on many occasions to introduce herself firstly and to check if everything was okay. I must say I thought this was wonderful. In none of the other 5 star properties we stayed at did we experience this.
A tip would be to take a tour with Vintage Cape Tours. Our tour guides - Steven Andrews and Aubrey - were absolutely amazing and we had the most wonderful day with them. Definitely worth it!
The only disappointing part of our stay was the actual room we stayed in. We were kindly upgraded to the Koljanner Suite but I must admit it looked very tired and not at all what you would expect from a 5 star room. I know they are trying to keep the suite restored as part of the old buildings, but inside it was really old and in need of a serious update. The bathroom was very old indeed, with stains on the bath, floors, basins and in the shower. It was perfectly clean but just seemed a bit old, dark and run down. I would have preferred something a lot more modern.
That said, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Grande Roche and would definitely return. Hopefully next time the rooms might be renovated.
