“Excellent location with great value for your money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

The Lagoon Beach Hotel was a very positive surprise. The view is breath taking, and the "luxury double room" with an ocean view was just that. The service was good, and the staff was both pleasant and quite efficient. The food in the restaurants in the complex was good. In four days we had a chance to try four different ones.

The room standard is what can be expected of a four star hotel though our friends had trouble with their air-condition.

Room Tip: A luxury room with a sea view on the second floor is optimal.

“Disappointed in accommodation given”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

After reserving a holiday room for myself and my daughter, I was disappointed upon check-in that the room we were given was very small/cramped and had absolutely no views. We quickly checked out and went to another hotel. We were very disappointed. Sometimes the advertising on the internet can be misleading.

Dear ClairceWhite

Thank you for your comments. I would be interested to see what room was booked for your stay with us. I'm sure if we were able to assist you with a sea facing room we would have done just that. In future please contact a duty manager should you ever have an issue.

“Superb Views But Disappointing Stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

My South African wife and I stayed at the Lagoon Beach on recommendation and what a disappointment it was. There were immediate difficulties on check in, with the apartment not being ready despite being asked to come back after having lunch. Then the electronic door key did not work (happened twice in 4 days) and we got to the apartment to find that the cot we requested was not there. We also reported a bathroom light that did not work and remained not working for the duration.

A shame as the apartment is quite smart though bits of it such as the dinner table chairs were in an awful state. It was pretty well equipped but as some are privately owned and some run by the hotel (we were in a hotel ran apartment) the standards can vary significantly. The view of the ocean and Cape Town (but not all of Table Mountain) was very good however many apartments do not have an ocean view.

There are 2 swimming pools, one on the roof by the Spa and one on the ground floor terrace close to the bar. As menioned by previous reviewers the bar service is awful and there is a real lack of seating around the pool and on the terrace. Although there are staff wandering around, trying to get them to serve you is something else.

We did not try the two main restaurants as the menus were not displayed (not even in the guest services directory) and the fact that at 6pm half of it was already set up for breakfast put me off entirely. The Thai restaurant at the end of the hotel did however have its menu outside. The menu looked good and on the occassions we past it looked busy.

We did not try the Spa as once again there was no treatment/price list in the guest directory. We went up to the Spa reception to get a pricelist but they did not have one spare. The receptionist showed me their copy with highlighter marks on it and offered to email one to me (very useful when on holiday) but there was no offer to photocopy it or send a copy to our apartment. Bearing in mind the high cost of treatments and the number of times we saw the girls having a cigarette in the car park, we decided not to have a treatment.

The supposed shuttle service into Waterfront is kept well hidden and finishes at 6.30pm, just before we wanted to use it. A taxi into Waterfront was quoted at 150 rand (£14.50) not cheap and more than if we picked one up on the street. There is very little else shops, restaurants or bars wise nearby so you really do need a hire car.

All in all very disappointing due to the high expectations that we had. The views of Cape Town (especially from the terrace at sunset) are spectacular but when you struggle to get a drink to enjoy them with you loose than delight that you should have. This should be a very good hotel but it just isn't.

Room Tip: You must make sure you request and pay for an ocean view if you want one.

“Hotel from Hell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

May be a good location with a view of the sea but the service is non existent, the staff incompetent and the bar is ripping people off second to none.
Most suitable I am sure for people who have too much money and not used to anything decent.
The bartender is making a fortune and fleecing the guests.
The rooms are disgusting. Well certainly the 4 I got to view.
We checked in after seven and the room was not made up.
Complained to a manager on duty. The second room we went into stank so of cigarette smoke we once again moved. So on to room number 3.
The kettle is on a ledge with no plug. Have to place it on the floor to boil. There is no mirror above the "desk".
The hairdryer is in the cupboard under the washbasin. The plug points under the washbasin are not suitable for Souh African plugs.
If you cannot get the plug out of the wasbasin which may well be filled with water you could end up electrocuting yourself.
We had to phone housekeeping to explain how to get the plug out..no not a click clack..there is a little switch behind the spout??Ok got water out.
Would like coffee...yes please..Take kettle place on floor!
Would like to use my straightening iron..no not in the bathroom which is filled with steam but in the bedroom seated comfortably in front of a mirror...placed my vanity case with small round mirror on to sit and dry and straight iron my hair, which tends to want to do its own thing around humidity of any sort.
The next morning had to move to room number 4 as we were at that stage not in the room that we had originally been booked into.
There at least the kettle could be placed on the bedside pedestal and I did not have to crawl around on the floor to plug the kettle in.

The poor couple who held their wedding there on the afternoon of Saturday 14 Jan 2012 must have paid a fortune for the bar tab. Not a single guest who indulged themselves at the awful bar paid a cent for a drink that afternoon and who knows until whenever the idiot wedding payer stopped the tab, it all went on the "wedding tab".
The lady serving us at one stage said we are just too busy and cannot get you anything from the bar or the restaurant, so from that moment on ignored us and looked in the other direction to ensure that we did not bother her.

On the Friday night the barman charged ZAR 32 for a rock shandy and ZAR 40 for a don pedro. (We had 2 x rock shandy's and 1 x don pedro)

No receipts were being issued and when I asked for a receipt for the ZAR 104 charged the barman did some calculations on a calulator to ring up items to amount to ZAR 104 (2 x 200ml soda,2 x 200ml lemondade, 1 x beer shandy and 1 x beer ) was rung up. I really performed and a gentlemen by the name of Anthony Kelly said he was some sort of manager and what is the problem.
To pacify us he gave us each a ZAR 200 spa voucher.
I did enjoy the spa treament thanks Anthony.

So come Saturday when we checked the prices with new staff the quoted prices were ZAR 18 for a rock shandy and ZAR 25 for a don pedro.

All I can say is steer clear unless you have more money than sense and have no need for really decent service and accommodation.
At least the air conditioners worked in the rooms.

Dear Lynn F

I was appaulled to read your comments. We are certainly not in the business of "fleecing" our guests nor are we a "rip off" with our prices.

I will relook the erganomics in the bedrooms but this is the first time we have recieved a complaint about kettles and hairdryers being in the wrong place.

I will address the fact that you recieved poor service and an extremely busy evening. No matter how busy we are, service should always remain top class. This is what we aim towards. I find it unacceptable that any staff memebr would tell a client that we are too busy to help. That is just not our standard and you have my word that we will address this.

“2nd Visit A Disappointment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We stayed at the Lagoon Beach Hotel in 2009 and it was great. The staff, the room, and the service were excellent. As a result, we booked to stay again for 3 nights in January. What has happened to this place? It looks shabby-the chairs in the bar are disgusting. The whole place needs a paint job and a thorough cleaning. In our shower, the water was not draining. We called maintenance-great guy who told us that it wasn't the drain, it's the fact that the floor is not sloped properly. So we had to stand in over an inch water (old water) that didn't drain properly-disgusting. Finally, there are some staff members that have bad attitudes. Customer service is key to business and I think that training for them is necessary. While checking out, the lady was coughing and sneezing all over our paperwork. Gross. The World Cup may be over, but tourists are still coming and you still need to maintain a high standard.

Dear BBRhodie

Thank you for your comments. You will ba happy to know that we are planning a soft refurb in the bar area in the second quarter of this year. This should bring a much needed improvement to this area.

I will have maintenance look at the room you were staying in and ensure that any maintenance issues are resolved.

Please come visit us again to see how we have improved our offering at Lagoon Beach Hotel.
