“Great location, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2010

Stayed here twice about a month apart. First stay was marred by struggles with front door lock which also kept us awake with other guests needing help. This was resolved by second visit thankfully. Although advertised as B&B, breakfast not included in most bookings -- but 59rand bought a filling breakfast. Best room is Dreams (upstairs) for decor and relatively quiet. Expensive wifi.

“Sweet Orange Gusethouse is a nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

Sweet Orange Guesthouse is located in an older villa in Sea Point, the Jewish quarter of Cape Town. Sea Point Promenade with shops and restaurants is at a walking distance. It is a quiet and safe accommodation for the weary traveller, most of its visitors are backpackers.

Rooms are clean and showers are OK. The hostel is relatively far from Waterfront but it is easy to get a bus or at night a taxi. The hostel has a patio behind the house where you can sit outside and breakfast is served. The breakfast is very good.

The Sweet Orange is a nice place, with friendly staffs that clean, wash linen on request (extra) and prepare breakfast. There is a large kitchen were you can also have breakfast or sit and enjoy a tea. The friendly owner is present in the morning, apparently he runs more B&B’s.

“Ripped OFF big time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

Charged £500 for 3 nights for 2 us for 1 room during Englands world cup visit.
No hot water in the sink but shower was good. Concete bath. Yes CONCRETE! Location up a side street . Need a taxi to get to the centre.
Breakfast was decent.
Stayed in better hostels than this. Overated and overpriced.
One of the main reasons why thousands of world cup fans didnt visit South Africa.
One word. EXPLOITED by greedy owners.

“Sitting on the fence for this one - esp when u experienced 3 other B&Bs before this.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

Had booked Sweet Lemon but was transferred to Sweet Orange upon reaching there. I think i'm honestly sitting on the fence for this one because there is a form of comparison because this was the last B&B stop before i fly back home and this would have been the 4th place we stayed during our SA trip.

Service was friendly and ok but average because there are other places that really make you feel the guest managers and the staff themselves love their B&B very much too and work with a lot of pride.... however over here, the manager doesn't stay over so it feels like he's just coming to work in the morning when u see him at your breakfast... the owner comes in, smiles and just makes a call on the shopping list for the things to buy...nothing much.... and when we came back in the afternoon on the day we checked out to collect the luggage at their B&B, (thus we had no more keys) we had to ring the doorbell so many times before someone answered the door because the manager happened not to be around as well. It just feels like a place you come and go, with not much emotions. No offence because i think if this was my 1st B&B, i would have thought it was fine but after experiencing 4 other B&Bs, the experience was very different.

This place seriously needs more cleanliness and maintenance. The light keeps tripping at night and it is very very dark when u come back at night. The floor in our Angel room has a sandy feeling. I know cleanliness is very subjective but we had to put our hand towels on the floor in the bedroom only because it felt very sandy everyday.

I didn't like the way the staff cleaned the rooms because i don't understand why they move your stuff for the sake of moving. EVERYTHING gets moved. Even though we always make it a point to neaten up before we leave. i put my vuvuzelas and flags nicely at my corner and it will get tossed to another side such that my flags bent and became crumpled. I leave my toiletries nicely at the bathroom shelf corner and they had to move it to place at the toilet bowl top. Why? I left my spectacles and small bag on the side table with the lamp and they had to hide it in the drawers when we came back. Imagine our shock when we came back and there was nothing on the shelves, drawer tops, side tables!! they kept it away in all sorts of drawers inside and imagine if we forgot to check! that's not the right way of cleaning a room. u don't play hide and seek with your guests' items.

My last comment was when i happened to be there where the guest manager picked up a call where a guest had called anxiously apparently leaving some kind of shaver behind and the guest manager asked for some more info like which room he stayed and put down the phone after saying he would check and call the guest back - in one hour. At first, i was thinking the guest must be really anxious, so i thought a reply of taking one hour to call him back would be considered really long to get back to a guest, especially if he was going to catch an airport flight. if that wasn't enough, he put down the phone and spoke at least 15 mins to another guest joking and laughing about the soccer matches. Although he did not offend me at all and i was ok with this guesthouse, it made me think twice about this place because the manager does not have a sense of urgency in the way he was working. I thought to myself the guest must be really anxious to call and yet he doesn't even try to delegate his staff to check the rooms quickly so that he can get back to the guest. Thats' when i felt i wouldnt like it if it was me as the guest on that phone.

The other three B&Bs i chose, although they indicated in their website that internet charges apply, but in the end that i stayed in provided me with free internet. Times have changed man - wouldn't hurt to have free internet.

However overall, this place is a good value if u just need a guesthouse to do what it does in a basic sense. Yes - and i mean just Bed. & .... Breakfast (u have to pay extraR49 for this).
