“A private and chic house in the Gardens area of Cape Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

This lovely old house in a quiet and pretty street is near to Company Gardens and is a short walk from the main shopping areas of the city. There is on-street parking outside the house and it is a short drive to The Waterfront or Table Mountain and Signal Hill. The house is tastefully furnished and very quiet and private. Beds are huge and comfortable and there is plenty of wardrobe space, lots of mirrors, a powerful hair dyer and tea and coffee making facilities. There are also honesty bars, (refrigerators stacked with wine and beers) and bowls of fresh fruit available. Breakfast is cooked to order and the staff very friendly and efficient.
Our room had its own entrance, fridge etc as well as its own plunge pool. The bathroom was wonderful, very state-of-the-art with matt black suite and great shower. This room (I think it was no 4) would suit any one who wanted a romantic stay. Quite pricey though at R1350 for two for one night.

“Amazing room in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

This is my hotel of choice when staying in Cape Town (stayed at three others places). Design buff will love this place. It has everything I would want: friendly staff, ultra modern and comfortable rooms, great breakfast, good security. The common area is a great place to chill out by the pool. They even provide a self-serve wine selection at a good price. Good value!

“Beautiful and welcoming place to stay in Cape Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Myself and my Mum stayed in Dunkley house over Christmas and New Year 2011/2012. We stayed in the apartment and had our own bedrooms. The apartment is up the steps from the main entrance, big, bright and comfortable. The kitchen is a good size and we cooked a few meals and it was great to have the fridge to keep our wine cold ! The apartment was cleaned every day and fresh towels were supplied daily. We slept very well and as the apartment is on the top of the house, it was very quiet.

We had to move out of the apartment for three nights, I stayed in the Aquq Room and Mum stayed in the Red Room both of which was lovely but the aqua Room is much brighter and bigger with it's own terrace and and very quiet as the Red Room is less bright and being so central to the main hub of the house can be a little noisy.

Dunkley House is in the Gardens area of Cape Town which means that you can walk downtown in about 15/20 minutes and we felt totally safe there; it is just a question of taking care and getting around by taxi after dusk. The Gardens SC is just 10 mins away and it has a huge Pick and Pay where you can do your grocery/food/wine shopping if you are staying in the apartment. We had Christmas Lunch in the Mount Nelson which was fab and we walked there and back; they do a great Afternoon Tea at the Mount Nelson. The V&A Waterfont is about 10/15 mins away ( we ate in San Marco and the food, wine, prices and service were excellent) in a taxi and a great day out and the new Cape Quarter area with some some good restaurants is also only 15 mins away by taxi.

We ate twice in Maria's restaurant in Dunkley Square, 5 mins walk from Dunkley House and the food and wine were delicious. On our shopping day downtown we had lunch outside at Mint restaurant at the Taj hotel and that was such a lovely meal with decadent service. We also ate in Diva which is a 15 min walk from Dunkley House which is an Italian with very cheap food and drink and it is beside Perserverance, the oldest oub in Cape Town and it also has good food.

The breakfasts at Dunkley House are to die for, lovingly prepared by Eunice. Grace, Joy, Gibson, Beauty and Tutu are so welcoming and lovely that you feel like you are staying with friends. The honesty bar is a great idea and very reasonable, especially if you want cool drinks/chilled wine and are not staying in the apartment and as such have no fridge.

You can guess from this review that Mum and me had the best time at Dunkley House and you will too !

Room Tip: If you are a couple, I would say that the best room is Bay 4 but the aqua Room is also lovely and le...

“A safe, stylish place to stay in Cape Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

I stayed here with a couple of girlfriends for nearly a week. The rooms are nice and clean, the decor is very stylish. Breakfast is excellent and the service was really nice. It's in a quiet residential area (Gardens), and I felt completely safe the whole time. It's close to Kloof street that has great shopping and restaurants.

“A great retreat in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Stayed here for the Two Oceans marathon and it was wonderful with a large, cozy tub to soak in after the race! There were four of us traveling together and in the side house, there were three rooms attached via a living area, which was quite nice as you could hang in the living area and catch up.

They also had a "help yourself" kitchen to make teas, grab snacks, etc. Service was nice - they weren't hovering over you and you didn't really notice them around.

Room were quite spacious and had your own garden area attached as well, but we didn't have the chance to use it. The rooms were also well appointed and nice fluffy duvet for the bed.

It may be a bit hard to find the first time you get there if you drive - and the streets are quite narrow - so if you are American, be careful you don't accidentally sideswipe a car trying to drive down the small street!

Felt quite safe and they had a secure door which was locked to get into the entrance.

Would definitely stay here again.
