I stayed here with relatively low expectations, especially considering some of the outrageous reviews posted by others. And whilst the hotel could improve in a few areas overall it's still a great place to stay and represents very good value. My stay was for 12 nights,so I got a good feel for the place.
Let's start with the bad stuff.
* Swimming pools could be better. The outside pool is really a glorified bird bath, and the head waiter told me he'd never seen anyone swim in it. I can tell you, it's not one you'll be doing laps in! There's a very small inside pool, that's a little useless.
* Air conditioning in our room (actually it was a 1 bed apartment) wasn't all that effective and could have been placed better in the bedroom.
* I asked three times for the battery in the rowing machine to be changed, to little effect. There clearly needs to be slightly better communication between staff.
* Internet a little sketchy, but at least it didn't cost a fortune. They charge based on how much you use, not how long you use it for - which is a fairer system than most hotels.
* Traffic noise was a bit of a problem in the mornings. But if you want something quiet, then you're better off staying in Greenpoint or Waterfront.
So, really only small things.
Good stuff :
* Great sized room - we booked a superior room and were given a room with a full kitchen, and separate bedroom.
* Nice breakfast - everything you'd want including loads of different kinds of bread for toasting, fresh fruit, bacon, a chef who does eggs - omlettes, fried eggs, french toast, pancakes... juice and good coffee. We stayed for 12 nights and I didn't get bored of it.
* Good staff - always friendly and courteous. When I wanted to sit outside on the sun loungers someone ran out to ask me if I wanted a drink from the bar, and someone came along later with a few towels for me.
* Ideal location - if you want city centre and need to be near things. You can walk to De Waterkant or Waterfront, lots of nearby shops and museums in the CBD. Lots of cafes on Thibault Sq. A little noisy with the traffic in the mornings.
* Good housekeeping - everything was cleaned daily. We had a few small issues to do with a light bulb in the bathroom going that wasn't fixed, and the sofabed thing wasnt' a great sofa, but we weren't in there much.
Overall I reckon this is a great place to stay. and don't be put off by idiot reviewers who had a sour experience. For the money it is excellent value - of course it's not a five star hotel, but it's not five star prices, either.
Obviously for the record I'm not in any way associated with this hotel. But I'd recommend it for sure.

Dear “traveltavern28”
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay with us. We value all forms of feedback from our guests in order to constantly improve on our service delivery process.
I am pleased to inform you that we are in the process of looking at expanding the outside terrace area which might include building a large pool area where guests can bask in the lovely hot Cape Town sun. With this expansion we are also looking at upgrading some of the hotel facilities which could include additional air conditioners in the apartments. Apologies for the delay in the batteries for the rowing machine and I can assure you that the matter has been addressed.
Your good remarks are well received and I have conveyed your great remarks to all the staff of the Fountains Hotel. It always brings a smile on everyone’s face when they hear of satisfied guests.
We greatly anticipate your next visit to Cape Town and in welcoming you back to the Fountains Hotel.
Kind Regards
Theo De Zeeuw
