“there are better places in town”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2011

just stayed at the village lodge for 3 nights.
the rooms are very small and very dark. the bed is huge, which is nice, but it is hard to get around it in the tiny room. hardly any space to store your clothes. bath ok.
bed linen not completely clean.
breakfast ok, but not special. service ok, but not really good for South African standards.
there are definately better places in the same area for the same money.

“Incredible Stay in Cape Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2011

I ended up beginning and ending my trip with the Village Lodge. My first eight days I stayed at the 143 Waterkant room 3 location--it was incredible with private bath and rooftop deck that had incredible views. This was a self-catering spot--but had everything you could possibly want. The location is great also--easy walk to the V&A Waterfront, close to restaurants and nightlife, and just steps from the SPAR grocery store. Management and staff were great and many knew me by my first name within a few days. On my return to Cape Town, I spent one of my last 2 final nights in a different location, SALSA 3--nice comfortable space--even though I preferred 143 Waterkant. Best of both places where how centrally located they were and how when you wanted to escape from the nightlife--it was a quiet place to retreat. I would definitely recommend the Village Lodge to anyone!

“Nice From A Far - Awful Up Close”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2011

Me and my wife of 1 week stayed at the village lodge as part of our road trip from Port Elizabeth - Cape Town and back. We stayed at a number of B&Bs along the Garden Route on the way to Cape Town & on the way back. This was the most expensive (largley due to being CT of course) & by far the worst place we stayed.
We arrived in the afternoon & were taken to 'the Villa' (sorry 'luxurious Villa') by a more than helpful young lady. On entering the villa & being taken to our room we were happy with what we saw. At first glance it was exactly what we had booked. We Were pleased.
However it didn't take long for things to go down hill. I will list the problems we had as it will probably be easier.
1 - The bathroom door handle fell off
2 - The safe wasn't bolted down
3 - The pool was dirty (full of soil in the bottom) & the sun loungers too.
4 - The internet didn't work at all
5 - A plug socket was coming away from the wall in the shared kitchen down stairs
6- A cable was hanging from ceiling to floor at the bottom side of the spiral staircase (which caused me to bang my head on one occation)
7- Breakfast wasn't available at stated time (stated 7.30am. We saw a senior member of staff coming back with the bread & milk at 7.55am). We had a taxi booked for 8am to go on the Robben Island tour.
8- The attitude of a certain member of taff. The gentleman stated above (at the time we believed to be the manager)
.
Whilst I can understand maintanance issues it was the responses we got that were the problem.
On the first evening of arrival we went to complain & spoke to the above gentleman. I now believe he may have been the night manager or supervisor type.
His responses:
1/5/6 - I will get those all sorted ASAP (this never happened during our 3 night stay).
3 - It's been windy today & the pool gets cleaned once a week (NOT acceptable for a hotel).
4 - We are aware of the internet problem & it is being sorted (Never was during our stay & the regular cab driver for the hoteltold me that guests were saying the same 3 weeks before).
5 - My favourite. The Safe. "It's quite heavy & I can't exactly see somebody running down the street with it" (I am sorry but this is South Africa, the place wasn't the most secure & I could lift it easily). Would a theif steel a small locked safe if he found one?

Had our complaints been dealt with more professionally I probably wouldn't be writing this review in the first place. The standards wern't great but the attitude of one particular individual completly brought our satisfaction levels down to rock bottom.

“Perfect location, esp. for gay travellers.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2010

Great location, in the heart of Cape Town's gay neighborhood. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, and the hotel was reasonably priced.

“WOW...beautiful and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2010

Because we needed at least 3 bedrooms, we decided on this location as it was more affordable than getting 2+ hotel rooms. I never imagined it was going to be so incredible! The location was perfect and it is a very cool trendy neighborhood with everything nearby. The "cottage" is gorgeous, nicely decorated, spotless, with great beds. The breakfast was very nice and the staff was wonderful. We felt like we were living the good life! It was great to have a kitchen since we were staying for several days and of course the children appreciated the cable TV! All around it was a lovely and perfect place to stay and I will definitely be staying there again!
