“Not my choice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Our Travel Agent booked this an affordable hotel just outside Cape Town. To be honest, given the other accommodation we stayed in during our visit to South Africa this was very disappointing. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was very nice. But it is too far out of central Cape Town we had to get a taxi in and out as there is nowhere really to eat around the hotel unless you like chain restaurants. The bathroom was in need of more than a make over but it was clean. Rooms are quite small. We asked for an early morning alarm call and never got it!

Room Tip: Up on the 5th or 6th floor away from the traffic noise

“honey moon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

we had our honeymoon here in march 2007 , the first room was not our choice so we asked for the room to be changed which they did, it was very nice, we really enjoyed our selves, the hotel did not make it special for us but it was very nice, the second part of our honeymoon was to mauritius but wish we had stayed at the protea sea point , we look forward to another visit.

“Comfortable and clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Stayed here for two sets of four days with a five day Garden Route Tour between. On arrival met by friendly and efficient reception staff and taken to room 301 at the back of the hotel. This was very small with little storage space and very odd bathroom arrangements!!!!The next morning went down to reception to ask for a different room and Patrick on reception was very helpful and transferred us to room411. What a difference, spacious, well equipped and with a small balcony with a side view of the sea.Television, tea and coffee making, fridge and very efficient air conditioning (very useful as Cape Town was having a heat wave during our visit). The sun is on the balcony in the morning. We were so pleased with this room that we requested it for our return visitand this was granted and it was a pleasant surprise to find water and Dove toiletries as exrras on our return.
The hotel has a pool on the fourth floor which is small but good to cool down in after you have been out all day, Sun loungers on the pool terrace but only 11 in total so not always possible to get one.
The hotel location just off the promenade at Sea Point is good and there is little traffic noise from the street. The bus stop for the City Sightseeing hop on hop off bus is two minutes away and it is a pleasant walk along the promenade to the Waterfront. There is a supermarket and chemist just round the corner on Main Road.
Breakfast in the hotel was good with a very extensive hot and cold buffet and the girls were very efficient and friendly with supplies of tea and coffee. The hotel restaurant is the Spur Steak Ranch which is cheap and cheerful and popular with locals and families. We ate at 'Cascade on the Promenade' opposite the hotel which was good and also ate at La Perla on the Promenade and La Mouette at 78 Regent Road both of which are minutes away on foot.
Overall value for money hotel, clean and comfortable with friendly professional staff and good location for a short stay in Cape Town but nothing special.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are larger and have a balcony.Avoid the small rooms at the back od the hotel.

“More than expected.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

I went to this hotel as the 50% discounted price offered by a website was within my price range. I doubt whether I would have been so happy with the amenities IF THE FULL PRICE WAS PAID!
Reception and porter were friendly, I was worried about the fact that each room on the Arthur's Road side had its own cantelevering balcony - what about parties etc.at night time?
The ONE party did not go on long - the balconies are too small! The outside noise level was also unexpectedly low, regardless of a "POPULAR STEAK HOUSE" on the premises. The street is one way with low traffic flows. So overall: My fears were ruled out and I had a pleasant Night's rest!
How long the construction noises of probably upgrading will still go on is another worry - it was disturbing during normal working hours and tha Saturday.
Goof TV with reasonable choice of programs, lighting good, desk wrongly positioned along the wall so the lamp hid the mirror. A blanket in the cupboard for those who hate duvets is a suggestion! TOO HOT FOR SOUTH AFRICAN BALMY NIGHTS!
Parking was good, close to lift and the R40 per night was not charged! THANKS to Protea!
Bathroom very small with shower over bath, curtain too narrow, so water all over the floor. The bathroom rack, was half broken on arrival and relieved itself from the wall during my 2nd night.
Checking out was flawless and efficient

“Will Ruin Your Valentines Day!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We booked a Valentines Day special in 2011 as we were getting married on Table Mountain. The deal included champagne and chocs but they were missing and after a lot of phone calls and finally a meeting with the manager they finally gave in a produced a tiny box of chocs and a half bottle of cheap champagne with DIRTY glasses!!! They also overcharged us and it took a long time for them to refund the excess charge. The staff are unresponsive apart from one or two. The room was too small to swing a cat and not very clean. Avoid this hotel at all costs!!!! We finally booked out and went to another Protea Hotel - Fire and Ice and it was absolutely wonderful!!!! Great friendly staff, great service, clean rooms, great food. It was a little more expensive but WELL WORTH IT!!!

Room Tip: Protea Fire & Ice is not far away and is a very reasonable 5 star rate (in my opinion) Hotel.
