“The ideal location and sancutuary for the start to your Holiday in SA”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2007

My wife and I used the Sir Francis for the first four nights of a 10 day trip to South Africa. This was going to be our base for the stay in Cape Town. Firstly it is easy to find, secondly it is only a 15 min stroll to the V&A Waterfront. The accomodation was good with roomy self catering apartments, all the basics included like bath, shower, seperate lounge and bedroom, balcony. Breakfast is offered and this consisted of either continental or full english. The staff were very friendly and were only too helpful in giving you any advise you cared to ask. Apartments in a very good location for getting out of the town if like us you have hired a car. All in all a very good experince at a low cost.

“Expected better”

Stayed here for 4 nights. If you want luxury or comfort, you might want to opt for something nicer. If you are travelling on a budget but want something not too cramped but rather spacious, this can work. It is self-catering meaning no bellmen/porters, you have a kitchen - it is basically like a small apartment. Breakfast is a full-breakfast, not bad bearing in mind you are not paying that much.
If internet plays an important role, choose something else. Even though the wi-fi signal was in our bedroom, I was only able to connect the morning I cheked out. When we enquired about it, we were told to sit in the corner of the lobby-area because the signal is "good" there...we expected to have a connection in our room as the hotel's web site does not explain that there is only "limited" coverage.
Breakfast was fine - I had no problems with that.
The pullout-sofa is NOT the most comfortable and do not have sheets or blankets...ask for it when you check-in or beforehand!
The main-bed had a fitted sheet on but no top-sheet and we were forced to sleep directly under the blanket (All travellers know that hotel-blankets are not the cleanest...).
The bathroom was VERY moldy, small and rather yucky. I know coastal-areas have non-stop problems with mold...but as a hotel...there are products out there to help with it.

So in short, if you only need a place to sleep, take a quick shower and does not mind the noise from other guests (the hotel is built like an apartment complex with outdoor hallways etc.) and can take care of yourself - the Sir Francis is fine.
If you are a clean-freak and want comfort and staff that can give you attention when you need it, stay somewhere else.

“Horrible!”

If considering this hotel, please call beforehand to check what facilities they have as over half of them are non existent. There is no childrens pool, no health club, no spa etc. The furniture consists of chipped MDF and the general maintenance of the room is very poor indeed. Please see pictures. We found hairs in one of the draws, chattered glass on the floor, dust in every corner of the room and mirror had marks all over it and the valance had some very suspicious looking stains on it. The bathroom is mouldy and has rusty shower rail and very basic/poor fixtures and fittings - the toilet was broken, as was the lock to the kitchen window. The chopping boards in the kitchen had dried food on them. The pool is tiny and has a 10ft drop onto concrete on one side and a drop on to piping on the other side. There is no scope for sunbathing, as the sundeck only has sun for a couple of hours in the morning. The fridge doubles up as a mini bar and is jam packed with minibar drinks, which leaves littel room for you to buy your own food, should you wish to use the appalling kitchen. The manager was rude and unapproachable, and refused to refund any money, although the amenities he had listed were non existent!

“Great value and very friendly staff”

My Partner and I have just returned form a great stay at this complex. To the point, we actually returned to the complex after visiting PE. The rooms are very clean and spacious. Admittedly the rooms are not air conditioned, but when you can open the windows and get a grerat sea breeze, who needs air-con?
The pool is, to be honest a littel small, but hey, it was OK.
Parking is good and secure and the overall complex is pretty good.

“A pleasant experience”

We have just returned from spending 9 nights at the Sir Francis. We found all the staff very helpful at all times, nothing appeared to be too much trouble for them.

The suites are basic but spacious (lounge, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and balcony). The beds are comfortable, with linen change twice a week and towels are changed daily.

The bedrooms could do with some air conditioning, though there are ceiling fans in the lounge area. Access to the hotel is very secure, so there are no worries about unwelcome "guests" in the hotel.

The only down side is the fact that the pool area only gets the sun for a few hours in the morning. Though lets face it you should not be wanting to spend too much time at the side of a pool when there are so many other lovely places to visit in the area.

It's approx 20 minute walk down hill to the V&A Waterfront and there is so much to do down there. Lots of shops, restaurants and bars (and food/drink is very cheap). A nice touch is all the "street entertainment" - usually some locals singing or small bands playing etc.

So much to see in the area .... Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulders Beach, Robben Island, Shark Diving were amongst our favourites
