We so enjoyed our stay in one of the cottages earlier this year that we decided to return and spend a few days in September. When one enters and drive up through the The Prince of Wales drive up to the hotel, with palm trees on both sides, it is obvious that this is a very special place. That is why so many famous people are guests at The Mount Nelson. We were greeted as if we were friends and were shown to the cottage which was immaculate. There was fruit and fresh roses on a table and the air conditioning and lights had been switched on. We were in time for the renowned afternoon tea which is a British institution and not to be missed. There was the resident pianist at the Grand piano. Afterwards, in the sunshine, we strolled through the beautifully kept grounds. We had invited friends to dinner and we asked if we could have this served in the cottage. Within minutes we met the charming lady who is responsible for Room Service and everything was soon arranged.
During the afternoon a dining table had been placed in the sitting room, beautifully laid and with crystal glasses. The knowledgeable waiter arrived and it felt as if we had our own butler. We were served sparkling wine and canapés and food was chosen from the extensive menu. For wine we chose the Mount Nelson Red Blend, specially made for the hotel. The food, wine, and service could not have been better and the occasion was memorable. The next morning we had breakfast in the flower filled orangery. There was the scent of freesias, and there were tulips, delphiniums, lillies and other flowers. On the terrace outside was a magnificent display of primulas in pots and around the fountain dianthus had been planted. The Head Gardener, who has worked at the hotel for many years, is most talented and the gardens are always a delight no matter what time of the year it is. Later we swam in the heated swimming pool which is shared by guests staying in the cottages. From here there are fine views of Table Mountain and it is difficult to imagine one is so close to the centre of Cape Town. A walk from the hotel down Company Gardens is most enjoyable.
There is a courtesy car service with eco-friendly cars. In the evening, before dinner, we had drinks in the new Planet Bar which has such a jolly and friendly atmosphere and in the evening attracts a smart crowd. We drank coffee in the lounge which is huge and it has so many delightful and comfortable places in which to sit. It is rather like staying in a lovely English country house. One has the impression that nothing is too much trouble and the staff told us that it is the policy of the hotel to make everyone feel special. From our experience of hotels in Europe and the USA this is unique. Our friends, who had recently stayed in a suite at The Dorchester,London, considered our cottage was far superior and much more comfortable and homely. From our experience we think The Mount Nelson is the best hotel in the world. If you enjoy elegance, charm, peace, lovely gardens and exemplary service, then this is the place to stay.
A TIP TO HELP TRAVELLERS CHOOSE A GOOD ROOM
The original part of the hotel has mostly large rooms and those overlooking
the gardens are probably the most attractive. A newer part, opposite the
main swimming pool, is being entirely refurbished and I should imagine it will be very up to date. It is very convenient for the swimming pool, Oasis Restaurant and spa and there is a wide expanse of lawn for sunbathing. One is not at all cramped as in many hotels. There are several buildings containing luxury rooms within the grounds and of course there are the cottages, one of which is reviewed above. The cottages are opposite the smaller heated pool. We prefer to be away from the main hotel and the cottages give the impression of living in a private house yet at the end of a pathway is the main entrance to the hotel and all facilities. Room service is immediate, day and night.
