“Don't go!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2011

Good afternoon

I recently tried to stay @ the property listed in the subject line above but unfortunately had to cxl on arrival due to lack of proper service and a general disappointment.
(Each $ sign represents a moment in the procedure where I feel that the situation could have been turned around or resolved.)

We arrived 30 min early but were ordered to come back later as check-in was only from 2pm ($1.00).

When we asked if we could park our car in the hotel parking (so we could walk to a coffee shop), we were told only after check-in ($2.00).

It wasn't possible to leave our luggage at this point either ($3.00).

When we returned we asked to use the rest room but were 'requested' to check-in prior to using it ($4.00).

On registering we were asked to settle in full and then also leave an additional 1000 rand for breakages ($5.00).

When I questioned the staff member on their apparent lack of customer service they interrupted ($6.00) without apology ($7.00) and preferred to re-explain the hotel policy ($8.00).

This is when I asked to cxl my reservation as I had a feeling that they were not particularly interested in the guest standing in front of them.

The staff member telephoned a manager to confirm my cxl request but instead of transferring the manager to me, she put the phone down ($9.00) and said that they would be in touch - When I asked why they didn't just speak to me at reception ($10.00) or on the phone ($11.00), I was told that there was no manager on site ($12.00) but they would contact me via email or tel to offer an apology.

It's been 5 days since our arrival @ the hotel and we have yet to receive a courtesy call or email? ($13, $14, $15, $16, $17.00)

Given the check-in procedure I'm not expecting much from the complaint handling dept either ($18.00).

We travel frequently and for the past 20 years have been staying in hotels all over the world. During this time I've only ever made one other formal complaint to a hotel operator! ...It was in France, and I had walked in, looking for a 5 night stay. When I requested to see the room prior to registering...I was blown away by the receptionist's response: 'Sir! This is not a museum! You can see the room after you pay!' - That was 5 years ago in Cannes. My wife & I have been back to that very same promenade hotel every year since then as complimentary guests! But because of the operators understanding I have also recommended it to my international colleagues & associates who I know have stayed there several times, both for business and leisure, not only to become income generating regulars for the hotel but also for the exceptional service that they receive.

If this message is not intended for you please would you forward it to your marketing team or your supervisor and cc the manager at your property in Cape Town ($19.00).

I look forward to your response.

Thank you for the review!

Management has profusely apologized to this guest in question. Our procedures were followed and our reception were under the impression that they had handled it correctly. However, for whatever reason, the lack of compassion for the guest and the service ethic was not reflective of the service we had asked for from our staff.

As we are not a full service hotel and are self catering hotel apartments, we do not have a duty manager available to guests at all hours, hence the lack of management during the guest complaint. We have since resolved this issue and have appointed a supervisor to deal with these sort of enquiries.

Thank you for raising your concerns, we have made improvements since then.

Kind Regards

Marketing

“If you have a car stay somewhere else”

Following a genuine misunderstanding my car was clamped in the hotel basement. Parking bay markings are not at all clear and release fee is R250 or about US$40..

Hotel staff were quick to walk away from a problem that they were partially responsible for...

Once again poor service defines a South African Hotel..

After all the aggravation and time wasted on a fairly straight forward matter..I would strongly recommend that if you have a car, stay somewhere else..

“Ideal for groups”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

3 of us shared a 2 bedroom unit which was perfect. The bedrooms were lovely as were the bathrooms and very spacious. This place was made even better by the Food Lovers Market downstairs which provided some great breakfasts. The apartment was serviced daily and Reception were also very helpful organising taxis. A great place to stay as a group which also made it affordable.

“Cape Town”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

This place is excellent value, but for a reason. It's in a dodgey area. I was mugged outside the apartments and there was no police response, and absolutely nobody that I had previously asked was willing to admit there was a problem in the area. The muggers simply walked away, laughing because they knew that nobody would come.

When I finally spoke to the police the next day, they admitted that even they are too worried to be there at night.

You can't be on your own at night in Cape Town, so get taxis if you must. Don't wear anything of anything value when you're outside at night.

Besides, everything that you can find around the bay area of Cape Town, you can find in any other developed bay area in the world: generic restaurants and shopping malls.

Table mountain, and the view from up there, is very cool. Don't go there on your own. Plenty of dodgey looking people around who prey on single tourists.

The apartheid museum is interesting, opposite the police station, but again, don't go there on your own. Outside there were guys who were in our face, asking for money.

“Quirky Chic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2010

We were booked into the Icon Apartments by our UK Cruise Agent. Upon docking in Cape Town,we didn't know where VIP ICON was located, or what the amenities were. OK it lies in the commercial district of Cape Town, and 25 minutes walk to the V&A Waterfront - but don't let that put you off. Taxis abound.
The biggest shock came when the lady receptionist guided us to our apartment on the 11th Floor. We emerged from the lift to be guided along the walkway of what seemed to be a film set of 'Vertigo meets Alcatraz' - V-e-r-y QUIRKY. (see photos).
Once inside our apartment I was delighted with the furnishings and layout. The bed was Big & Comfortable. With a convenient dinette area, and an entertainment centre (Plasma TV/DVD/Tuner) I would have been proud to have this at home. The designer's ideas created a lovely CHIC ensemble.
A full (brand new) kitchen was available if we needed it (Oven, Microwave, Toaster,Kettle, Fridge, Glasses, Crockery and Cutlery). We used only the breakfast implements and ate out (see our BIZERCA review).
Reception staff were excellent. We were a wee bit nervous about venturing out onto the streets after dark, but the young lady on reception offered her Security Man to escort us to the nearby resaurant. No need, we overcame our anxieties.
Taxis were ordered for us when needed. Restaurants were recommended. Other info was given as needed. I don't recognise any of the poor service comments from previous reviews.
For the more energetic, there was a pool and a gym. And for added convenience there was a business centre Mall with Cafes, Hairdressers, Takeaway food and grocery store on the ground floor behind the Reception Desk.
The apartments offered a more comfortable chill-out environment than a traditional hotel room would offer. But no Bar - there was one with Plasma TV's for Football, 100 metres or so away.
