We stayed at the Glen Boutique Hotel for 8 nights because it is a gay hotel and we always wanted to try it.
The common areas of the property are charming and centered around the chic pool areas. The hotel recently completed construction of some new guest room buildings, greatly increasing the hotel's capacity and adding to the resort feel of the pool area.
As for our accommodation, we were in room 2 in the hotel's original main building and we were disappointed with it. We had asked for room 2 based on the website pictures and information which were a bit misleading. Prior to our stay, we were offered some newer rooms, but declined these because the hotel couldn't provide us with any pictures. So management should update the hotel website and the lesson we learned is that guests should always remember to take a hotel's professional pictures of staged rooms with a grain of salt.
The charm of the property and common areas ended at the door to room 2. The problem with room 2 is that it is bleak and looks dirty. The room had basic furnishings and felt like it had been stripped of any decor. The room has a lot of potential and could be vastly improved with a few minor suggestions--(1) steam clean the carpet and remove the old gum stuck on the carpet (or simply replace the carpet); (2) add some artwork/color/plants to the bedroom AND bathroom walls (i.e., restore it to the picture management displays on the website); and (3) add large bath rugs in front of the bathroom vanity and tub to hide/minimize the age of the bathroom floor tiles and speckles from a sloppy paint job. We have traveled the world and stayed in some of the best properties out there and so we came to the Glen with high expectations that room 2 did not meet.
As for the service, it was fantastic. The front desk staff seem to serve many roles--waiters, concierge and bartenders--and at times they seemed a bit stretched thin, especially when dealing with so many prima donnas. Despite this, the staff was always pleasant and helpful. Another suggestion to management would be to add more staff for peak times of the day. Special thanks to Freddy, Ricky, Izak, Jean Paul and Rian (sp?) for their first-class warmth and hospitality.
Some other nice features about the hotel are the wonderful complimentary breakfasts, the ample parking, the location and the fun, well-attended pool party they hosted on New Year's Eve.
Overall, we'd consider returning to the Glen, but only if we stayed in a new room on a higher floor.
