“Amazing Views and Wonderful Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Ellerman House for three nights during our honeymoon in October. As another reviewer noted, the view of the property from the gate is underwhelming, and we were slightly concerned that our experience was not going to match our high expectations. And then we walked inside.

Property

We were greeted at the door and given a tour of the magnificent property, which includes an extensive collection of South African art (including an art museum) and has stunning views of Bantry Bay. The property, which was converted into a hotel in the early 1990s, literally feels like a home. Because we did not go at a particularly busy time (late September), our room was upgraded to the East Wing Suite, which is spacious and luxurious and includes a living area, a dining area, a bedroom (and adjacent sitting area), a large full bathroom and a separate powder room and two entrances to a balcony that overlooks Bantry Bay. The room also included a complimentary mini bar that included wine, premium liquor and small snacks.

Service

The service at Ellerman House was, without a doubt, the best that we have ever experienced. The property manager, Nick, and the other employees made us feel like we were guests in their home, and we relied on them heavily as a resource for what we should see in Cape Town during our stay there. My wife and I were late meeting our tour guide one morning, and I was impressed that the hotel staff had invited him into the parlor for a cup of coffee or tea while he was waiting for us.

Food and Wine

The food was also wonderful. On our first day, the hotel was unable to print the lunch menu on account of a technical issue, so the chef simply came to our table and asked us what we would like to have. In spite of the fact that Cape Town has a number of great restaurants, we elected to have dinner at the hotel on two of our three nights because the food, service and wine selection were so good. Our only regret was that we were not able to eat dinner on the balcony (from which you can see Robben Island) because it was too cold. On a related note, though the property itself is very expensive, we found the food, wine and other incidental items to be reasonably priced (particularly in light of their quality).

Location

Many people who visit Cape Town will tell you that it is important to stay near the V&A Waterfront, which is closer to the "city bowl" and is within walking distance to many stores and restaurants. But we actually thought it was nice to be slightly removed (the Waterfront is less than a ten minute drive (in the complimentary shuttle) from the hotel) from the "hubbub" of that area, and the scenery, accomodations, service, food and intimate atmosphere that the Ellerman House offers outweigh, by leaps and bounds, the need to be "close to the action".

Summary

We could not recommend this property more highly, and though we have already been fortunate to explore Cape Town, we would be inclined to make the 20-hour trip across the world to enjoy the Ellerman House experience again. In our minds, the Ellerman House defines what we will expect from Relaix and Chateau properties going forward, which may be a tough standard to match.

“Wonderful. Wish we could have stayed longer.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

We arrived to Ellerman House a little jet lagged and to be honest we were a bit underwhelmed upon arrival. This changed quickly. Everything about this place is both luxurious and relaxing. Our room (#9) had a great balcony and view of the ocean. The service was perfect, every meal was special and very good (rare to find). The downstairs bar is fantastic, all the staff were very helpful, intelligent and un obtrusive. Sometimes these places can get full of themselves but none of that here.

“Paradise on the Sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

We stayed at the Villa and it was perfection in every way. The views are to die for, the service was terrific and to top it all off the Hotel has a wonderful art collection which was graciously shown to us by one of the Managers. It's a wonderful way to experience Cape Town!

Room Tip: For privacy and views you can't beat staying in the Villa!

“The Ultimate luxury!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

From the minute we arrived we were made to feel like royalty! Ella, the hospitality manageress, gave us a very warm welcome and tour of the hotel (which very quickly felt like home). Our suite was immaculate in shades of green and with the most spectacular view over Bantry Bay... The fresh roses, the perfectly ripe strawberries... the ice cold wine... the OTT pastry basket with freshly brewed coffee delivered in the morning... These guys know exactly how to do luxury and attention to detail the right way! The bathroom has piles of glorious soft white towels, the amenites are divine, the 'pantry' with its delicious home made snacks get replenished twice a day! I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday there and we had the most elegant dinner on the terrace with a special birthday cake from the chef. Breakfast is a fabulous affair and the menu caters to every whim... Thank you to Mitch for our personalised tour of the gallary and a special thanks to Ella whose warmth and special attention made our stay even more special! I have stayed in so many different 5-star hotels and Ellerman hotel is by far the best I have ever come accross!

“Being his Lordship in his own villa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

A staff of 65 people works for 10 rooms. When we were there they had not more than six guests including us. More service is not possible. Great view! Excellent interior, like an old English castle. All fire places are burning all the evenings, though almost never is a guest there - everything is waiting in this fantastic place that you, Lord and Lady X, might come. This is an exceptionell hotel, brilliantly located. Many extras, transports, all soft drinks and alcoholics except whine and sparkling whine, laundy, millions of nuts and cakes. In your room so many as if you plan a party with 20 people, more in the pantry. If you do not like the three big bottles of alcohol in your room, prefer others, they bring immediately. Food is fine. But do not miss the best in Cape Town while you are there: Luc's test kitchen in Woodstock. We will when back in Cape Town definitely stay here again.
