Stayed here for 3 nights as part of a tour of South Africa. When I booked the tour we were originally scheduled to stay at Hippo Hollow and then the hotel was changed to Pine Lake Inn due to overbooking problems with Hippo Hollow.
Didn't know what to expect, but when we pulled up at Pine Lake Inn I was pleasantly surprised as all the public areas looked lovely and the grounds and pool were all really attractive.
Our party were all allocated rooms on the third floor of what is the old wing (rooms 100-300). None of the rooms had been vacuumed and that was going on as we arrived. The room was very dated, grubby and with things falling apart. We had to change our room because the toilet was continually flushing due to a rusted and stuck ballcock. We were then given a room on the ground floor of the same wing, where a rather noisy school party were also housed. This room was equally grubby and dated but the loo was ok. We had patio doors with a small patio and chairs, but the doors were locked with no key available. We later found out that this was the same for all the doors on the groundfloor rooms. The light console in the headboard was loose and my husband had to screw it back into place. Another couple in our tour group had the same problem and also their kettle blew a fuse when they tried to use it causing loss of power to the whole of the third floor for well over an hour. Towels were thin and old and one of our party was given a towel with a huge hole in it.
However, the most worrying feature was that the fire doors at the end of our corridor were chained and padlocked. I have photographic proof of this and will be sending it to my tour company.
There is a second wing nearer the lake which is either newer or has been refurbished and although I didn't see inside any of the rooms it looks far superior to the wing in which we stayed.
We had breakfast and dinner included in our stay and both were very poor. In fact three of our party went down with stomach upsets after eating dinner the first evening resulting in two of them missing one of the days in Kruger and one missing Kruger altogether! The evening meal was a buffet - a roast complete with yorkshire puds, but the vegetables were cold and the beef was raw in the middle.
This is all such a shame as the place has the potential to provide a lovely stay and the staff are really friendly, but as it stands I could not recommend it at all.
