“Extremely disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

I'm surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews below, as our experience at Highgrove House was very poor. We stayed for one night on our recent honeymoon (it was recommended by a UK agent, who we have complained to).

The only positive thing I can say is that the grounds were lovely and very peaceful.

Our room (the honeymoon suite) was large but very dated in terms of decor and smelt extremely musty - keeping the windows and doors open didn't do anything to alleviate this. We were shown our private pool, which hadn't been cleaned and was covered with a layer of leaves and dead insects.

We found the dinner (a 5 course set menu) very disappointing. The food was served in a 70s style which admittedly may be to other people's tastes. Unfortunately the quality wasn't good either - pre-dinner snacks were greasy, the bread was stale and the meat and vegetables overcooked. We expected a lot more from an allegedly award winning restaurant. We also suspected that the bottled water had actually been filled from the tap as the screw tops were loose.

We felt that this hotel was living off former glories, and would recommend that any honeymooners - particularly young people (we are both 30) avoid it.

Thank you for your feedback provided during your stay with us. As the new owner for the past 3 years of this classic English Country style establishment boasting Persian carpets and antiques, it is regrettable to hear that you experienced some significant product gliches whilst staying over at the Lodge.

The staff have worked at the Lodge for the previous owners for many years and we constantly strive for improvement and excellence and provide ongoing training where necessary. We are situated on a working avocado and macadamia nut farm with huge 100 year old trees and endeavour to utilise all fresh produce, as well as organically home grown vegetables and herbs for our meals. We also produce our own honey which is our on-going commitment to the environment.

We can assure you that this is not the standards we strive to provide to each and every guest. and will investigate the elements mentioned in your review, and take action accordingly.

As you really only had one night with us and could not experience everything we offer, we do hope that you will not refrain from visiting us when you are in the Kruger Park area in the future.

Yours sincerely
Kathy Russell

“Forrest hideaway close to Kruger”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

We came to Highgrove Lodge in ‘low’ season Sun-Tues break. We got a very good rate for an orchid suite. If you can get suite number 1, it’s more private than the rest. (Pool and sauna)
It’s the quality finishing touches that puts this lodge on my places to stay map. I don’t think I have had such good service and eye to detail since staying at the Palms in Zanzibar. It is family owned and run, with Kathy the owner running the nut and avocado farm as well as the lodge.
The food is good quality and plentiful, breakfast is a highlight in particular if taken in the gazebo looking over the hills, weather permitting.
The Lodge will arrange activities for you if you like, but we just enjoyed the peace and quiet.
I highly recommend a stay here.

“Fantastic Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011

Jacquie & her son Greg looked after us through out our stay even to the extent of rescuing us when our prearranged car(by UK travel company) for the airport failed to show up they sorted us out on their bank holiday with alternative transport & we caught the flight.
On a differnt day Greg took us for a long walk through their grouns and orchard very interesting indeed.
The views and general surroundings were lovely, food was superb. Couldnt ask more.
We will strongly recommend it to all!

“Informal excellence in every respect”

A memorable two night stay. Luxury accommodation with private pool and sauna and a separate sitting room complete with a blazing log fire on a rainy afternoon. Discreet but friendly service and delicious, unpretentious food. No wonder Highgrove has been accoladed as the best small luxury hotel in South Africa.

Ideal for visiting the Kruger park - Phabeni gate is an easy 30 minute drive away - and their DBB rates come at a fraction of the cost of staying at an overpriced Safari Camp in the park.

If you are in this neck of the woods, stay at Highgrove. You will not be disappointed.

Would that more hotels were as fine as this.

“Highgrove, top notch”

Excellent from start to finish, if you want to get away from it all this is the place to go. Its pretty quiet and exclusive, and miles from everywhere so if you want to get around hire a car. The food is fantastic, even breakfast is a highlight. Rooms are seperate cottages with living room,(no TVs by the way!)large bedroom, swimming pool, large bathroom and outdoor sauna. Rooms are in tip top condition, in fact you won't even notice that there are any staff working here apart from the fact that everyting is done without any fuss. Rob, manager, is knowledgeable of the area and is very friendly and helpful. So if you are happy lounging around in the the sun in the wonderful gardens or the pool looking forward to dinner this is the place for you.
