I'm surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews below, as our experience at Highgrove House was very poor. We stayed for one night on our recent honeymoon (it was recommended by a UK agent, who we have complained to).
The only positive thing I can say is that the grounds were lovely and very peaceful.
Our room (the honeymoon suite) was large but very dated in terms of decor and smelt extremely musty - keeping the windows and doors open didn't do anything to alleviate this. We were shown our private pool, which hadn't been cleaned and was covered with a layer of leaves and dead insects.
We found the dinner (a 5 course set menu) very disappointing. The food was served in a 70s style which admittedly may be to other people's tastes. Unfortunately the quality wasn't good either - pre-dinner snacks were greasy, the bread was stale and the meat and vegetables overcooked. We expected a lot more from an allegedly award winning restaurant. We also suspected that the bottled water had actually been filled from the tap as the screw tops were loose.
We felt that this hotel was living off former glories, and would recommend that any honeymooners - particularly young people (we are both 30) avoid it.
