“A hotel of real character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Not your normal hotel, thank god, but a place with real character that shows just how to do things right. This place is a real find, the rooms are all adapted from a house and it feels far more like a B&B than a hotel in terms of intimacy, friendliness and cosiness. The rooms are dressed to a high standard, interestingly though they have a coarse rope textured floor which might not suit all tastes but is undoubtedly hard wearing.
The rooms have all you need to stay in them, though the additional cost of WiFi was a bit of a surprise in a hotel of this character and quality. The rooms have good quality coffee, tea, biscuits and cafetieres, large clean bathrooms and big beds.
The one main concern is noise. The houses have the original sash windows and these do not stop sound as well as modern windows. The hotel is on a busy junction and in the day noise is quite high, however the noise level falls off by evening, although I understand Friday/Saturday nights can be loud on adjacent Florida Road. I slept with no problems, and I think all but light sleepers should be fine.
The location of the hotel is very handy for the bars and restaurant on Florida Road, and none of the local attractions in Durban are far away.
The food in the hotel is excellent and there is a great selection of local eateries to suit all tastes and wallets. You will not go hungry here, in fact you will need to return to try the rest of the availabale places.
This once again is a hotel I would not hesitate to return to.

“Splendid boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

A splendid fews day spent in this stylish sophisticated boutique hotel situated a 3 minute car ride from the Durban beachfront with easy access to other areas of Durban. Beautifully decorated in soft furnishings well-suited to the style of the building. The room on ground level was easy access and we could stroll to the conservatory style dining-room for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We chose to eat most of our meals there as the food was delicious with great attention to detail. Exceptionally friendly staff rounded off a lovely stay at The Quarters. We will definitely be back again and would gladly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room which is situated in the middle of the buildings. We preferred ground-floor.

“Lovely boutique hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

The other reviews have pretty much said it: this is a stylish boutique (this word means something for once; its a small hotel and as spread over four townhouses you feel a proper sense of intimacy about the place, and furnishings smart and neutral without being minimalist in any way) hotel. It has friendly and helpful staff and is in a good location. I was a bit worried about the noise as next to two large roads, but this wasn't a problem even with the air con turned off - some rooms may be noisier than others though so if you're a light sleeper best to request a quiet room just in case. Breakfasts are good too. Might be a little on the pricey side for what it is as one reviewer recently wrote, but having travelled around KZN for a couple of weeks I don't think it's too much out. All in all, warmly recommended.

“Good location, low value for price paid”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011 via mobile

I spent one night in this hotel and some things are not coherent with level of price paid. I booked from booking a night at a price of about 140 euros for double room included breakfast. It seems not that much, but in durban a one day pass for bus is 1 euro, and dinner in nearby florida road is 20 euros for 2 persons. The value is not that good! The room is excellent. Nothing to say about it, except for one reason. Quarters is a group of 2 storeys colonial houses, so every room edges a road. Mine is located at a crossroad of two highly traffic road. Horrible sound insulation. I asked for a changed and i was promptly offered for a room on a side road which was much better.
I had another problem with breakfast. Once i was seated the waiter gave me a menu with prices on it. I didn't remember if breakfast was included in my tariff, so the waiter go and asked for it, saying that it was Not included. After the breakfast i checked out and the receptionist said nothing more was given. Luckily. A bit more of information would be helpful.

“Great rooms, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

The Staff at Quarters were very friendly and always helpful.
The layout of the hotel is a little strange, with 4 houses that have been converted into hotel rooms. At first the whole thing seems a little disjointed, but after a day here, it kind of makes sense, and has a homely feel to it.

All the meals I had at the Brassiere were delicious and quick to come to the table.
There's also plenty of good restaurants a short walk away in Florida Rd if you want some more variety.
I highly recommend Butcher Boys steak house, great value, and great steak.

If there were a fridge in the room, it'd be a perfect score all round.
