“Budget accommodation for budget experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2010

I often stay at this hotel with Tour Groups.

It is a sad fact that many tour operators in Europe operate on a cut-throat budget when selling tours in Southern Africa, and in order to sell packages they compromise heavily on the experience offered to the client. The trend, especially in Western European countries such as Holland and France is to offer packages that are cheap and packed with a large quantity of activities instead of less activities of a higher quality. This tends to go hand in hand with accommodation options to match.......

If you are the kind of guest that is happy in a 30-40 EURO per night hotel in France, this hotel will be better than your expectations.... it will be fantastic..... but..... if you are the kind of guest that enjoys eating at Michelin restaurants...... stay away....

PROS
- Price is great.
- location is on the beach.
- food quantities on buffet are copious, food quality is OK.
- rooms are large, basic but comfortable.
- beds are comfortable.
- bathrooms are perfectly OK and clean. There is always hot water.

CONS
- location is not really safe for walking around at night.
- food quality is OK but not great.
- rooms are old and need refurbishment but they are OK.
- the area can be noisy, so if you are a light sleeper, you may struggle to fall asleep, especially during events, holidays and long weekends...
- bathrooms are old and need refurbishment.
- Lifts are slow.
- Service is generally slow, although sometimes it can be fast......
- Parking in the street is a problem. The undercover parking is available, and I'm not sure how much it costs, but it is not a pleasant walk for the fainthearted...I was nervous walking to and from the garage with my wallet in my pocket.....The garage is located in a building that has been seriously vandalised and one has no choice but to feel threatened....

WOULD I RECOMMEND THE HOTEL TO A FRIEND?
Yes, I would, but only for a short one or two night stay on business near the center of Durban, at a fraction of the price of some of the much nicer hotels. I would not recommend it for a prolonged stay, or for a holiday with family, unless it was for a short stopover in Durban.

Note that the business centre is basically just to read e-mail.... and slowly.....

“Clean, Safe, and Friendly- Stay Just for the Breakfast!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2010

My friend and I had flown in from Canada for the Comrades Marathon. I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It's not the Hilton- the decor is slightly outdated- but you can tell it must have been one of the true gems of the beach front in it's day.

I felt very safe there, and was pleased that they held your key at the front desk upon exiting the hotel. The rooms was clean, and with the exception of people blowing Vuvuzelas in the hallway, our stay was pleasant.

The Seven Palms restaurant had an AMAZING breakfast buffet with everything you could possibly ask for. The wait staff was always handy to top up your coffee. Exceptional!

Great Location right on the Golden Mile. Such friendly staff. Would certainly stay there again.

“Not as Bad as Expected!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2010

Having read all the recent reviews I went with an open mind- 1st impressions very dated and yes the rooms do need upgrading, but the linen was clean and beds comfortable- we slept really well. Sea views wonderful - if you able to get sea front room.
Area- not best but as long as err on side of caution not a problem. Be guided by the staff- although they did want to book us a cab every time we ventured out.
We were two ladies attending a conference in the nearby ICC so it was in a good located for that. We met up with some other like wise ladies also on the conference and we walked out at night in groups of four+ and had no problems just walk in well lit areas and keep off the beach at night.
The staff really made our stay they were wonderful and all really helpful at all levels. And the food pretty good too for a three star hotel- breakfast plentiful and good variety. Fantastic fillets steak from the bar menu at only £4.50 I dont think many hotels will beat that.

“Awesome breakfast, friendly staff, slightly retro feel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2010

Appreciated the friendly staff - lots of smiles, helpful suggestions and a few jokes thrown into the mix. Created a relaxed atmosphere and made us feel at home :-)
One of the best things was being able to open the big window of the room and hear and feel the sea breeze - so make sure you ask for a sea facing room!

Breakfast was a welcome surprise, huge buffet of hot food - with a chef cooking eggs to your liking! Fresh fruit, cheese platter and pastries along with the expected cereals etc.

Only complaints were small - a hairdryer attached to the wall which had so little ooomph it took me 30 min to dry my hair! (be good to have some quality hairdryers available at reception) And scratchy bed covers which made it a little uncomfortable to lye on the bed and relax .... (easily fixed though, just pulled them off)

Overall enjoyed the retro feel - felt like I might have been in a late 70's movie... although it was the hospitality from the statff that made it!

“Great value hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2010

I was unsure about staying in this hotel after reading some of the reviews, but I needn't have worried.
We stayed 2 nights and found it a pleasant place to be. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the concierge told us how to keep safe, what attractions to visit and recommended an excellent place to eat.
The hotel's own bar did good value meals and we had dinner the first night and lunch the next day in there. The breakfast was good too.
There was free internet which is a rare thing to find in South Africa.
The only downside was that the road was all dug up and closed at the front of the hotel so we had difficulty finding the place when we arrived. This no doubt will be finished for the world cup.
The car park was in an adjacent building across the street.
