I often stay at this hotel with Tour Groups.
It is a sad fact that many tour operators in Europe operate on a cut-throat budget when selling tours in Southern Africa, and in order to sell packages they compromise heavily on the experience offered to the client. The trend, especially in Western European countries such as Holland and France is to offer packages that are cheap and packed with a large quantity of activities instead of less activities of a higher quality. This tends to go hand in hand with accommodation options to match.......
If you are the kind of guest that is happy in a 30-40 EURO per night hotel in France, this hotel will be better than your expectations.... it will be fantastic..... but..... if you are the kind of guest that enjoys eating at Michelin restaurants...... stay away....
PROS
- Price is great.
- location is on the beach.
- food quantities on buffet are copious, food quality is OK.
- rooms are large, basic but comfortable.
- beds are comfortable.
- bathrooms are perfectly OK and clean. There is always hot water.
CONS
- location is not really safe for walking around at night.
- food quality is OK but not great.
- rooms are old and need refurbishment but they are OK.
- the area can be noisy, so if you are a light sleeper, you may struggle to fall asleep, especially during events, holidays and long weekends...
- bathrooms are old and need refurbishment.
- Lifts are slow.
- Service is generally slow, although sometimes it can be fast......
- Parking in the street is a problem. The undercover parking is available, and I'm not sure how much it costs, but it is not a pleasant walk for the fainthearted...I was nervous walking to and from the garage with my wallet in my pocket.....The garage is located in a building that has been seriously vandalised and one has no choice but to feel threatened....
WOULD I RECOMMEND THE HOTEL TO A FRIEND?
Yes, I would, but only for a short one or two night stay on business near the center of Durban, at a fraction of the price of some of the much nicer hotels. I would not recommend it for a prolonged stay, or for a holiday with family, unless it was for a short stopover in Durban.
Note that the business centre is basically just to read e-mail.... and slowly.....
