The hotel is very, very old and unclean. Breakfast not very good, internet ridiculously expensive. Close to the beach but the neighborhood is dangerous, ugly and there are people yelling in the streets at all hours of the night and early morning. Rooms for more than one person are very large, which is nice.

I have never seen such glum and unhelpful staff.

I witnessed a mugging right outside the window and while sitting on the terrace for an evening meal was pestered by beggers!
Ordered a Curry at the once Famous Beach Hotel Terrace Bar and the middle was still frozen!

Rooms have a nice sea view but spoilt by the constant noise of hooting taxi`s, screaming locals and loud boom boom music from cars.

Durban was once a nice place about 30 years ago, but has become a filthy cesspit of degradation and crime, if you value your life go elswhere!

I enjoyed the location, the size of the apartment. If you are planning a trip to Durban, where you will be only sleeping in the hotel, and you need limited to no amenities; Then, this is the place to you.

Better than prior reviews. Maybe they took advice and updated. Certainly I found the Beach Hotel clean, spacious and comfortable and the staff helpful with some non-hotel related problems. The breakfast buffet was varied, generous and delicious; basic tea/coffee service in room. Maybe not a five star hotel but excellent value for the money. Location and views same as higher priced hotels and it had all that I needed for a weeks stay for a conference plus a couple extra days for tours..
