For my first visit to Africa, I landed in Johannesburg around 6pm after a grueling 15 hour flight from ATL. Not so grueling afterall though, because I was so excited to be visiting the Motherland. Planning on staying in Kruger National Park for the following next 10 days, we figured after 15 hours in a plane I deserved to relax properly in the gorgeous, much more exquisite than I imagined, Intercontinental Sandton Towers. We are driven in the hotel limo (a Mercedes Benz sedan) by knowledgeable and friendly Elijah, who presented me with a beautiful bouquet of red roses at the airport (he was obviously prompted by my beau, how else would he know I loved roses!? Well if he did, that's certainly some excellent service!!!). The property was nearly empty, so we had it all to ourselves in one of the nicest Ambassador assigned rooms, not even on the Club level, but just as nice. After unloading our bags, we are given a small tour of the Club level by one of the very courteous managers and escorted back down to the lobby restaurant. Soon after it began storming, and we dined on the best kudu and spring bok I'd ever tasted - the ONLY I'd ever tasted - in the gorgeous lobby, dimly lit by a huge beautifully decorated Christmas tree as I watched the trees outside being battered by what seemed a hurricane. With only one other couple near by, It was very romantic as we toasted with Cape Riesling to the eve of Christmas eve very grateful to have safely travelled so far and so smoothly. After the delicious meal, we explored more of what seemed a nearly empty hotel and ventured out to the pool. The rain had slowed down, but the wind still a bit strong and the temperature had dipped a tiny bit - if warmer, we'd certainly had dipped in ourselves. The outdoor pool was I believe on a top floor and flanked by palm trees and again dimly lit - a tropical paradise, a pity to not have used that evening. The next morning we had an equally exquisite buffet breakfast in the same lobby restaurant and realised that the pools in the lobby were filled with Coi fish as large as I've ever seen! Beautiful! And what a difference the daylight made - definitely one of the most beautifully designed hotels I've been to, much less any InterContinental property. A++++ quality of staff, service and design.
