This is a nice and comfortable hotel to stay at, where friendly service is provided. Unfortunately there are some negative aspects of which the most important is the price. This hotel is built Las Vegas style, although one could stay for half this rate at the top Las Vegas hotel, The Bellagio. We only stay at D'oreal when they have special promotions like their Sunday night sleep-over, where you pay only a fraction of the normal rate. We stayed there last weekend to make use of their special occasion rate for winners circle members, and paid about half the normal rate because it was my wife’s birthday. Another down side is that the breakfast area is rather crowded, resulting in us having had to wait a while before being seated. This hotel seems popular with oriental people who show total disregard for queues.
A rather nasty surprize that I received afterwards, was to discover that my credit card had reached its limit, because the hotel is still “holding on” to the holding deposit that they charged to my credit card during check-in, despite having settled the full amount during check-out. Upon my enquiry I was informed that this amount that included the full accommodation rate plus R1500!! for dinner, could take up to 10 days before being available again on my credit card.
Our first choice for a sleep-over at the Johannesburg OR Tambo airport is still The City Lodge at OR Tambo. This hotel is as luxurious and within short walking distance from the departure and arrival areas, and at half the price.
