“Bed, breakfast, beer, biltong..............”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2010

First impressions were good, arrival into the secure compound via free shuttle from OR Tambo airport, can't really fault it. Reception staff polite, accomodating, and helpful.

It's a B&B guesthouse, no thrills, the basics, but everything you need. Internet, breakfast, bar, clean sheets. Don't raise any expectations for this stop-over joint, you get what you pay for but it's all above board and they look after you even though they were busy with the World Cup influx. Cheap beer, good biltong, clean bed.

If you want to go to the Sandton area of Jo'burg, get them to shuttle you free to the airport and get the new GauTrain in, saves money on taxi's.

We were there for the World Cup and there were lots of different groups/nations staying there, all seemed totally satisfied.

“Excellent value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

We visited the Emerald for the World Cup and compared to similarly priced accommodation in South Africa this was excellent. The beds were comfortable and the transportation to and from the airport and Gautrain was useful in a city that is notoriously difficult to travel in.
The bar stayed open late and the company was warm.
Believe me, we experienced much worse in South Africa

“Basic to say the least!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2010

Only stay here if you need to book one night and need a place close to the airport.
This hotel is a 5min drive from the airport so was convenient for us. Our flight arrived at 11pm and we were leaving again at 8am, so all we needed was a bed and a shower. That it did provide. Service appalling. Waited ages for the driver to pick us up at the airport and after a 12 hr flight this really wasn't what we needed. We had to phone the hotel several times to check to see where he was. The excuse given was that the traffic was bad, but seeing that it was midnight and only a couple of km to the hotel, I found that hard to believe.
After finally reaching the hotel, we were met by the most unfriendly receptionist ever. A smile would not have gone amiss! The room was small and basic but clean. There was no fan or A/C and the room was hot and stuffy. At least the shower worked. We were exhausted so nevertheless slept well. Breakfast was ok. We left at about 830am after collecting a hire car from the airport, so the location of the guesthouse was the best thing about the place!

“Stopover hotel only!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2009

This property looked alot more attractive on the website but in reality was very disappointing. If all you need is a bed very close to the airport, then this option fits the bill. If you are looking for anything more, then look elsewhere. We arrived at about 7pm and the shuttle bus driver was very friendly. The staff at the hotel seemed grumpy and disinterested. The man who checked us in didn't even greet us - he just handed us our key and asked what time we would be leaving the next day. We had dinner at the restaurant which was a big mistake. We were served frozen vegetables and a sloppy looking lasagne. The staff looked so disappointed that we were ordering a meal so close to closing time and refused to cook steak for us. The 2 bedroom family unit was adequate for a stopover, but certainly not suitable for a holiday. There was no plug for the bath, there was no kitchenette for cooking in ( just a microwave), and it was very dated. I didn't dare let our children have a swim in the pools - they looked very unattractive! The lady at the desk had a permanent scowl on her face, but I managed to extend our check out time by one hour after a bit of grovelling!! The shuttle service back to the airport was good but I wasn't sad to be leaving.

“Fawlty Towers on steroids”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2009

Look, if all you're looking for is a free shuttle to and from the airport and a basic but clean room in close proximity to Johannesburg airport then you probably won't go far wrong with this venue. The service is very basic and you should avoid eating here at all costs unless you are starving. The shuttle driver was reserved but helpful enough, the receptionist wasn't friendly but did her job and the waiter seemed confused, somewhat dour and not at all friendly. The 'chef' or 'cook' on the other hand was simply dire!!! We had a gut-busting laugh at the little notes that kept accompanying anything from the 'kitchen' that informed us that we 'May tip the Cook' - that was never going to happen! It appeared that she may be the family maid or domestic servant who has also been tasked with cooking duties. Supper consisted of supermarket bought frozen vegetables [you know the type - uniformly cut peas, sweetcorn and carrots], frozen chips that were limp and hostile looking and a large portion of steak unaccompanied by anything remotely looking like seasoning or sauce. Breakfast was adequate but poor and the sight of said chef standing over the cooking plate with a bacon and egg sandwich in her one hand and a cup of tea in the other was unedifying to say the least. The previous evening we witnessed the owner ranting and raving at a fellow diner because they had the temerity to complain about the food after they'd finished eating, he made Basil Fawlty seem like a dignified and calm personality. The dining area is cold, literally and figuratively and lacks any charm or atmosphere at all. Any port in a storm but given the remotest choice we will not be back.
