In a residential neighbourhood near the JNB Airport, this guest house seems mostly suited to back packers. Room had bare fluorescent strips on ceiling for lkighting in was infested with ants. Bed was less than comfortable. Staff indifferent. We ended up having dinner at the airport, as the dining area and menu choices weren't very appealing

This is definately a budget stay. Transport from the airport was an inconvenience. My plane landed at 22:00 and I had to wait for other guests to land before we left for the guest house. I only got there after 23:00 despite only being 5 minutes from the airport. Rooms are adequit and clean but nothing fancy. Bed was hard and bathroom tiles broken. The benefit of being close to the airport is negated by the planes taking off and landing all night next door and does not allow any sleep. Breakfast was minimal and asking for more than 1 egg was frowned upon. For the price I guess this place is acceptable but with so many establishments available in the area, next time I will go elsewhere.

If you’ve been up since 0245 GMT and reach arrivals in Johannesburg at 2300 you’d be hard pushed to find a better place to spend the night than the Emerald Inn. Friendly staff, from the guy who picks you up at the airport to the lady on reception and the cook at breakfast in the morning; clean and perfectly adequate rooms; a very short drive to and from the airport; and very reasonable rates.

This was my second stay, the previous one being in June when my onward flight was too early in the morning to want breakfast or to take in the surroundings properly. This time the breakfast was fine and the gardens, pool etc all seemed well cared for and maintained.

I’m not sure it’s somewhere to stay long term but I have no real experience of Johannesburg – there seem to be a number of tour options which the hotel can arrange for you. However for a short stay, on your way to or from the airport, it is ideal and has a far more personal feel than the usual international concrete box chain hotels.
