“Good Location & Service, But Could Use Some Updates”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Jo'burg for 2 nights on the last leg of our Southern Africa adventure. The hotel has a good location that is connected to a mall that has some fantastic restaurants and shoppping. The hotel also has a pretty large and nicely equipped gym and pool. The lobby and indoor and outdoor restaurant areas are spacious, airy and well-decorated. Essentially, it's a very self-sufficient property.

The service is good too. Everyone we encountered was helpful and friendly and they were good about accomodating our Diamond Member late check out. We had an issue with a clogged drain in our shower and once we reported the issue, maintenance immediately resolved the issue.

We asked about in-room internet access and we were told that WiFi was only available in the lobby area. To improve, the hotel should look into offering WiFi internet access in the guest rooms, not just in the lobby. Many guests these days rely on smartphones and WiFi enabled devices that don't readily lend themselves to the USB cables offered in the rooms. It was highly inconvenient to have to run to the lobby everytime we wanted to use our iPhones.

The one disappointment was that the Regency Club was closed during our stay and in fairness, management did notify us of this in advance and did offer us breakfast in the lobby level restaurant and additional bonus points. However, as Diamond Members, management should have given us the option of having the complimentary breakfast delivered to our room and they should have offered us complimentary drink vouchers for use in the lobby level restaurant since most Regency Clubs would offer complimentary drinks and snacks anyhow.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay and we'd stay here again.

“Great but slightly old”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

From the outside, the Hyatt Regency is a statement of African elegance. Clean lines and simplicity is everywhere. The main lobby is bright and airy and finished in rich and warm colours again depicting an African design. The lady at check inn was absolutely friendly. However, the manager on duty wasn't very professional - he scolded the receptionist in front of guests.

Rooms are extremely spacious with all the usual amenities including an iro and ironing board. Bathroom is lovely with marble vanity, separate bath and large shower. However, furniture and fittings within the room are showing signs of being worn out. The mini bar cabinet was chipped ina number of places and the toilet roll holder fell off a few times. With regards to cleanliness, the entire hotel is in an excellent condition except for the armchair in the room which had popcorn lying underneath the cushion. The only explanation for this could be the staff not lifting the cushions to dust them off.

On a whole, staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The only issue I had was with the concierge - called to find out if the adjoining Rosebank Mall was open that day and all i got was 'Err.. I'm not sure'. The least you would expect from the concierge at a supposedly 5 star joint is to actually walk a few metres or make a phone call or two to find out if the mall was open or not. Recreation and health facilities are quite superb with up to date equipment.

Would I return? Probably not until the rooms have been revamped.

“Very fancy hotel, very comfortable beds and stylish rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

This is a really nice hotel, and the bed covers were really cozy. I have to say it is one of the nicest hotels i've every stayed at and i wished we had stayed there longer. The bathrooms were really beautiful and there rooms were nice and spacious. The sitting area in the lobby was really beautiful and a nice area to relax.

The Hyatt is as chains go, one of the best. All that the international traveller needs, with a flavour of the city and country it is in. This hotel is a a disservice to the chain, fulfilling neither criteria. Indifferent, downright rude service.

“Great location but would hope for a tad more of the little things”

What's going for this hotel is undoubtedly its location; next door to gautrain station and the new enlarged zone shopping complex. This hotel is prob around 20 years now and have seen dozens of competitors open in that time. Its comparatevly better days maybe are behind but this does not mean you shouldn't stay here. The ups are friendly staff, good breakfasts (best downstairs as the club floor is a bit limited but with exceptional views of Joburg), nice pool area on top floor, nice and always busy restaurant area at the reception (with free internet), easy access to hundreds of good shops and restaurants in a safe environment. The room feel preety std bus hotel, as std as they come with nothing to blow you away. I was surprised about the simple toilet paper quality, something you can expect at formula 1 hotels perhaps but not at 5 star places. Also, the work chair was of very basic quality. Not that it didn't function but it felt out of kilter at a 5 star. Bathroom larger than normal, that's an upside. Also good insulation form busy oxford road, didn't hear much noise. I also like to porters black uniforms and they guys are really helpful. The price is at a higher end for the product delivered. They sell at around 2000 rands/night and I would say that you'd start feeling real value in the early thousand, say 1200 if bfts was included. So, depending if that location is key or not, then that amount will buy you better rooms and experiences in say sandton. Then again I must say that 2 hrs 45 minutes from take off at CPT Intl to check in at Hyatt is worth a lot (if that area is key). All thanks to gautrain. Yes I can recommend Hyatt with ease, depending on what's important.
