“Not good”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2009

Very dissapointed with the hotel as i am in the travel industry and look at many aspects of hotels daily. Basic upkeep is missing and needs to be addressed. Couches in seating areas are fraying and dusty curtains .
It is like the cleanign staff just did not care if the job was done to 100% completion .
Very sad as i have stayed some good hotels in SA , they howevewr are genrrally the ones that are privatley owned and do not have to meet the minimuim employment levels as the large hotels have to . Staff training is the main problem along with attitude.
With 2010 around the corner they have a lot to get right not holding my breath.
I will keep this updtaed as i am back in JHB end April for final contracting and inspections.

“Loved Soweto”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2008

The staff at this hotel could not have been more friendly and helpful. The room was lovely and as the hotel is fairly new the facilties are great. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to experience township life in South Africa as it is a short walk away to freedom square and if you have an interest in the history of this country this hotel is a must!

  • Liked — The location is great to get around the attractions of Soweto
  • Disliked — the lack of parking

“Amazing, wonderful stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2008

During a recent visit to South Africa, my mother and I used reward nights to stay at the Holiday Inn Freedom Square. When originally arriving at the location, we thought the gps system had us in the wrong location because we were at a corner and did not see a hotel. The hotel sits above the farmer's market in a trading area. The area originally does not look appealing however once inside the hotel and learning more of the area, we grew to love the location. The hotel is amazing! The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. The guard at the hotel even gave us a tour of Soweto and took us to Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu's former homes. What a personal touch. The hotel at the time of our visit did not have an offical parking garage so in the evenings, we parked our car on the sidewalk in front of the hotel for extra security. The chefs in the restaurant are amazing and very accomodating! After a long visit traveling around to 4 countries in 12 days, the Holiday Inn Freedom Square was a beautiful place to come and rest. The decor is a mix of jazz and Soweto historical figures. I would immediately return if I was back in Soweto. Don't forget to stop in the Open Air Museum next door which tell the story of Soweto.

  • Liked — The staff! Really everything, but mostly the helpful, friendly staff!
  • Disliked — Nothing!
