“Avoid this place like the plague!”

All the brochures we have, the internet, and even the agents our travel agent booked through recommended Brookes Luxury Suites. Well let me tell you there is absolutely nothing luxury (or at least in room 117!) about these suites.
From the moment we arrived it was absolutely horrific.
First off we were told we were in a room with a sofa bed, thankfully our paper work confirmed otherwise - 2 bedroom suite. Then after the staff arguing with one another in their language that we couldn't understand, apart from the 'that will have to do' comment, we were given keys to an apartment which will have to do!
The lounge room on the face of it didn't look too bad, until we saw peanuts on the floor, the state of the generally run-down fittings, carpet, TV cabinet etc. Very old and run down.
The brochures noted the luxury suites as having a number of things such as air conditioning, satellite TV etc. THe rooms had the musty smell that you get in old houses.
There were basic things we didn't have and some that had been advertised as being available.
* No airconditioning! Fairly basic. There were fans in the room but even then our sons room fan was not working properly.
* No room safe.
* No changing of our towels or linen for our 4 day stay.
* Restaurant disgusting - more on this after.
* No satellite TV.
* Old plug outlets - so we couldn't use our adaptors to charge gear.
* No hair dryer - fairly basic.
* No shampoo - basic.
* Lights not working in some areas.
* Bedroom window hanging off by a latch.
* Curtains not on tracks.
* No pool towels.
* No iron.
The day we decided we would have a swim in the pool (which strangenly enough was pretty ordinary and not maintained well) it was cordoned off so we couldn't go in it. No explanation just a piece of tape around it.
The restaurant was disgraceful - run by the barman (who could not be classed as a chef), and a helper on the side. The tablecloths, floor, curtains in the restaurant were disgusting, along with the dirty toothpicks on the floor. The sweaty tea towel swung over his shoulder that was used for wiping around plates, and shifting food in the bain marie could hardly be hygenic. The microwave worked in overtime re-heating portions of food for meals. And, we know why there was never a person in the restaurant. Needless to say we didn't end up eating there either, but highly recommend the Blackbeards Restaurant at the hotel next door. Just a short walk along the road outside the gate and up a set of steps. First class restaurant with a team of staff and chefs and great service and views over the ocean.
Apparently this used to be the place to go - update your information travel agents and other people....it isn't now. In comparison we went into the Beach Hotel on the main strip across from the beach and it looked beautiful - rooms were very clean and large, the foyer area and restaurant lovely to sit and enjoy a drink etc. Can't vouch for the food as we didn't have a meal but certainly we enjoyed the time we spent there with great service and a top class location.

KEEP AWAY FROM THIS PLACE - YOU WILL REGRET IT AND IT TOTALLY SPOILT OUR TIME IN PORT ELIZABETH.

“There has to be somewhere better in Port Elizabeth”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

We stayed for one night with my two boys of 10 and 8. We had an early flight so the location was the reason we chose this hotel as it is only a five minute drive from the airport. That, however, is the only thing going for this place.

Our room was very basic, badly in need of refurbishment. We were put in a one bedroom room with a pull out couch for the kids to share. The couch was still a couch not a bed when we checked in. We foolishly thought that housekeeping would come and make it up into a bed. We were of course mistaken. It took three phone calls and an hour's wait until the night porter turned up with a blanket and one pillow. As he turned to leave I asked him where were the sheets and the other pillow. He returned after 10 minutes with these. We were then left to pull out the bed and make it up for our boys. No assistance was offerred.

The bathroom was unclean with mold. The shower sprayed all over the floor. There were no windows in our bathroom so we had to use the extractor fan. This meant you had to turn up the volume on the ancient TV if you wanted to hear anything.

Our bed was comfortable enough, though I was a little worried sleeping as the lock on the front door was pathetic. It was the old push in type and well worn. I am sure if someone had even leaned on the door they would have been in the room. No safe was provided, so had to carry valuables with me as I was uncertain about security.

We ate (Well, looked at what was described as dinner) in the in house retaurant. The food was dire. The only edible food was the fries. Everything else was an inedible soggy mess, and that includes the salad. By far the worst food I have had in a hotel restaurant. ever. Had breakfast at PE airport he following moring. Infinately better.

The staff just could not care. Disinterested would be the politest description I could give. Useless being the better description.

While there was a full kitchen in our room, there were no tea/coffee supplies. Still unsure all this time later as to how these were to be obtained.

I would only stay there again if all other hotels in PE were full.

“Comfortable hotel right on the beach in Humewood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2010

Great area of town but do not be deceived by the lead photo on their website: it is surrounded by other properties and not on some point on its own. Spacious 2 bedroom apartment with full kitchen, dining and living, views over the ocean - great sunrises, short walk down the hill and across the road to a great kid-friendly beach. The African trinkets at the beach were affordable and of a good variety. The weekend market was great to browse.
Easy to drive to shops, airport, it formed a great base for us visiting family.

“Really bad.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2010

We stayed here one night at the end of our trip on the garden route. The place is miserable. The rooms are grim and worn (I don't think they've been renovated in 20 years). The staff was unenthusastic at best and uncooperative at worse. And the restaurant -- disgusting. Our booking included breakfast but we passed on it when we saw the offering: a buffet that was completely fly infested. You can easily find better accomation in PE.

“Functional Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2010

We stayed at the Brookes Hill Suites before an early flight from Port Elizabeth airport the next morning. The hotel is was conveniently located only a 5-10 minute drive from the airport. Whilst the room was relatively basic, it was clean, the hotel has friendly staff and good car parking facilities, and finally, is value for money, so overall the Brookes Hill Suites served its purpose well! It is also pretty good value for money.
