“Good location, good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

Recently my sister and I stayed at the Brookes Hill for seven nights in a two bedroomed apartment through a timeshare exchange. We found the accommodation to be very bright and cheerful and well maintained. We had a good view of the beach from our balcony, looking across the bay to St Croix Island. There is a dual carriage-way between the hotel and the beach, but because the hotel is built up on a bluff you don't see the road or get too much noise.
The gardens and pool were well maintained and very attractive.

The staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful to us. Giving sensible advice on areas and times where it was not safe to visit in the Port Elizabeth. The hotel has very good security in the grounds and car park. If we had problems with anything in the apartment the maintenance engineer came within 5 to 10 minutes to fix it.

The hotel is situated about 2 blocks from the Boardwalk which houses the casino and a number of good restaurants all built around attractive man-made lakes. The whole area is prettily lit at night and makes a good venue for dinner and a stroll. There is a large free car park, again with good security, helping to make for a relaxed atmosphere.

Continuing along the coastal road out of town for about 6 kilometres is the Cape Recife Nature Reserve. Here the beaches are spectacular and the coast line wild. We visited several times to walk and view the birdlike and flowers and I would throughly recommend a visit. Again the hotel staff were only too happy to tell us about the reserve and how to get our entrance permit for the week.

All in all a very happy stay

“Value for Money”

We went down to Port Elizabeth for my wife's 30 year school reunion, and booked 2 nights at Brookes Hill.
As we had a dinner on arrival, we had to book in late. No problems there. Key was ready, night porter was efficient.
We had a ground floor room, with a view over the pool and ocean. Room itself was spacious, bed was comfortable. The bathroom, while small was well laid out. There was no hairdryer in the room, but a call to reception sorted that out. For a longer stay, there is also a kitchenette with all the utensils one needs for some self catering, incuding microwave oven and electric frying pan, plus a small sink for washing up.
Breakfast was adequate, reasonable selection.

The location on the beachfront is very good as one is a few minutes drive from the local casino complex and a variety of restaurants are close by.

All in all this is a good hotel, well maintained

“Very Disapointing”

The worst of the five hotels we stayed on our garden route tour. dirty room, stained furniture, old and in need of modenrnisation, awful restaurant and bar. the view was good which is just about the best I can say. Dont be fooled by the brochures ! two nights too many for us. If you are doing the garden from from Cape town to Port Elizabeth avoid this place and make your last impression a good one.

Stayed only one night and no complains!
This is a three star hotel and for us the hotel had everything a three star hotel should have.
Rooms were comfortable and fairly big. Staff very friendly and happy to help.
Plus the location is great!

“Avoid this place like the plague!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2011

All the brochures we have, the internet, and even the agents our travel agent booked through recommended Brookes Luxury Suites. Well let me tell you there is absolutely nothing luxury (or at least in room 117!) about these suites.
From the moment we arrived it was absolutely horrific.
First off we were told we were in a room with a sofa bed, thankfully our paper work confirmed otherwise - 2 bedroom suite. Then after the staff arguing with one another in their language that we couldn't understand, apart from the 'that will have to do' comment, we were given keys to an apartment which will have to do!
The lounge room on the face of it didn't look too bad, until we saw peanuts on the floor, the state of the generally run-down fittings, carpet, TV cabinet etc. Very old and run down.
The brochures noted the luxury suites as having a number of things such as air conditioning, satellite TV etc. THe rooms had the musty smell that you get in old houses.
There were basic things we didn't have and some that had been advertised as being available.
* No airconditioning! Fairly basic. There were fans in the room but even then our sons room fan was not working properly.
* No room safe.
* No changing of our towels or linen for our 4 day stay.
* Restaurant disgusting - more on this after.
* No satellite TV.
* Old plug outlets - so we couldn't use our adaptors to charge gear.
* No hair dryer - fairly basic.
* No shampoo - basic.
* Lights not working in some areas.
* Bedroom window hanging off by a latch.
* Curtains not on tracks.
* No pool towels.
* No iron.
The day we decided we would have a swim in the pool (which strangenly enough was pretty ordinary and not maintained well) it was cordoned off so we couldn't go in it. No explanation just a piece of tape around it.
The restaurant was disgraceful - run by the barman (who could not be classed as a chef), and a helper on the side. The tablecloths, floor, curtains in the restaurant were disgusting, along with the dirty toothpicks on the floor. The sweaty tea towel swung over his shoulder that was used for wiping around plates, and shifting food in the bain marie could hardly be hygenic. The microwave worked in overtime re-heating portions of food for meals. And, we know why there was never a person in the restaurant. Needless to say we didn't end up eating there either, but highly recommend the Blackbeards Restaurant at the hotel next door. Just a short walk along the road outside the gate and up a set of steps. First class restaurant with a team of staff and chefs and great service and views over the ocean.
Apparently this used to be the place to go - update your information travel agents and other people....it isn't now. In comparison we went into the Beach Hotel on the main strip across from the beach and it looked beautiful - rooms were very clean and large, the foyer area and restaurant lovely to sit and enjoy a drink etc. Can't vouch for the food as we didn't have a meal but certainly we enjoyed the time we spent there with great service and a top class location.

KEEP AWAY FROM THIS PLACE - YOU WILL REGRET IT AND IT TOTALLY SPOILT OUR TIME IN PORT ELIZABETH.
