“More like "the Sour Dude"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

Even though we stayed in early September, it was "off season" at the Sourdough. We were the only guests and found Bruce to be gruff and unapproachable. The feel of the place was rather creepy, sort of reminded me of the movie "The Shining". The breakfast was the best part of our stay. He charged us $124.00US for a small room with 2 single beds. Next time I'll stay in the Stikine...better access to food, ferry, town, etc.

" Sour Dude", yes, I take full responsibility, I was having a bad day. The 2010 season was extremely long, but that is still no excuse.

We are a small family owned and operated business in Wrangell since 1984. We have worked extremely hard thru the years at providing our lodge guests with a warm friendly Southeast Alaska atmosphere at the Alaskan Sourdough Lodge. Furthermore, we will continue to provide clean rooms, great home-style meals and a high value shared Alaskan Wilderness experience with our guest while they are visiting Wrangell Alaska.

Thank You,
Bruce E. Harding

The room we had was very clean. Bruce, the owner, was friendly and helpful but offered an unnecessary 'lecture' about picking us up after a tour, stating that if we were in NY we would have to take a cab. Of course, we were in Wrangell, AK and he was no more than 5 minutes away.

“Comfortable & Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

There are few hotels B&B and lodges in Wrangell. This is one of the better places to stay but do not expect luxury. The place is located near the harbor and minutes from downtown. The city in the past was considered, "rough place" by John Muir, and it some ways it still has the quality. The hotel itself is run by a former mayor of Wrangell, who is known by as Bruce. The rooms are fair size but you can hear next door. So watch what you say. Also, breakfast is included and served in a main dining area. Lunch & Dinner can also be arranged. Your host can arrange travel to Bear Watching Observation, fishing, and/or any other desired trips. Spend a few days here. Several places to eat, but recommend Stikine Inn Hotel has a decent restaurant. Wifi is free and available throughout the hotel. A golf course is nearby. Make sure you see downtown museum, Petroglyphs Park, and take a trip to see the bears at Anan Observatory Center.

“probably the best place to stay in Wrangell”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2009

Has everything one needs. Continental breakfast is fine (toast and jam, cereal, etc.) Sandwich lunches and dinneres by pre-arrangement. Walls are thin, so don't say or do anything you don't want the folks in the next room to hear. No towel racks in the bathrooms, but we got adjusted to this oddity. Free cable internet, phones in the rooms. Casual. Pleasant. Very clean. Wrangell is very small, so you can walk anywhere from the Sourdough Lodge.

“Recommended Alaskan Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2008

I travel to Wrangell, Alaska for business at least 6 times a year and I always stay at the Sourdough Lodge. And I always recommend people stay at the Sourdough Lodge when in Wrangell.

Bruce, the innkeeper, will go out of his way to make your stay a pleasant one.

The Lodge, actually a cleverly disguised grouping of modular homes, is not quite hotel, not quite bed and breakfast. I don’t like staying at B&Bs because staying at a stranger’s house can feel creepy. Hotels have no personality. Bruce’s Lodge is exactly in-between the two.

The free continental breakfast is basic: toast, fruit, butter and jam. But no protein. Hot, homemade style breakfast is available for purchase.

Amenities are sparse. You get clean towels, linens, toilet paper and soap (no shampoo). You do get free internet (wired or wireless) and can enjoy watching your favorite news or sports games in HD on one of the largest televisions I’ve ever seen.

  • Liked — Great place to stay.
  • Disliked — Jets in jacuzzi tub don't work.
