“Saved by Bruce!”

When our flight to Petersburg was aborted, Alaska Airlines dumped us in Wrangell. Bruce was a lifesaver. He made two trips to the airport to pick up seven of us and take us to the lodge. Then he went out, got groceries, and made us a delicious dinner! The room was clean, cozy, and warm. The next morning he made two trips to take us to the docks. Thank you, Bruce and Dar!

“A pleasant surprise”

My husband and I recently stayed with Bruce and Dar because our previously planned lodging cancelled due to a death in the family. We really did not know what to expect, but we were very pleased. We were given a suite that was quite spacious. The bathroom was huge and had a whirlpool as well as a huge stall shower. The Sourdough offers a continental breakfast. Treats and coffee are also available all day. Bruce was always available to pick us up or deliver us to an excursion. This was helpful because we did not rent a car in Wrangell. Bruce and Dar also offer a family style dinner (at extra cost), which was both tasty and fun. We would recommend a stay here while in Wrangell.

Room Tip: Ask for the honeymoon suite.

“Comfortable friendliness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2011

We stayed at The Old Sourdough Lodge on the edge of town. The Lodge is perfect---quiet, comfortable, clean, near enough to downtown to walk anywhere. We stayed in The Harding Suite---it was lovely, large, had a small frig, and had both a shower and a jacuzzi tub in the big bathroom. Breakfast was adequate: cereal, juice, toast, and excellent homemade jam. The Lodge is owned and managed by Bruce and Darlene Harding who are very warm and welcoming. I had to smile when I read a review saying that Bruce was "gruff"---I'm sure he would seem that way if you are expecting saccharin sweetness and plastic smiles. Bruce proudly took us thru the room he is remodeling, enjoyed hearing of our daily adventures, and even offered to get up at 3am to drive us to the ferry. These are good people and offer fine accommodations at a fair price.

“A great Alaskan adventure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2011

Fish on! Four friends and I made our second trip to Wrangell for the fishing derby in May 2010. We returned to the Harding's Alaskan Sourdough Lodge because of the value and the hospitality. Bruce and Darlene Harding know evyone on Wrangell Island so if you need something or a contact they know where to steer you.

The five of us stayed in the bunk room and it was spacious and clean. We ate most of our meals at the lodge and the homey feel is phenomenal. On the days at we were out fishing, hiking or bear watching picnic lunches and beverages were provided. The dinner menu has limited choices, but what choices. We had large shrimp, crab, prime rib and halibut.

The Hardings are extremely accommodating. They provided transportation when they could and went out of there way to store, package and get our fish boxes to the air terminal.

Thanks, Bruce and Darr, see you again soon!

“With Sourdough Lodge we got what we expected and more”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

Our stay at the Sourdough Lodge was very pleasant. Bruce was a good host that made my wife and I feel at home.

The room we had was comfortable and clean.

The breakfasts included with the room were simple affairs with toast, cereal, and the typical offerings you find at many hotels and motels in the lower States.

Although Bruce claims he doesn’t like to cook, he knows how to cook. The steak dinner Bruce prepared for us was wonderful. The dinner costs us around twenty dollars each, but if Bruce offers to cook dinner for you, I highly recommend you take him up on it.

We enjoyed talking to Bruce about his experience as mayor. You could tell that Bruce was not the typical politician--no beating around the bush. Bruce will offer his view on almost any topic you challenge him with. Unlike the typical politician, our experience with Bruce is that if he says he's going to do something, he does.

Wrangell is a small community, where most everyone knows everyone else, and they watch out for each other. Bruce picked us up at the dock after our tour with Breakaway Adventures--Breakaway Adventures picked us up by boat in Petersburg to tour Le Conte Glacier and then took us to Wrangell, where we arrived about 8:00 pm. Bruce also worked with the car rental company at the airport to stay open so we could pick up a car the next day (they are usually only open when jets come in).

If you’re looking for luxury you won’t find it at the Sourdough Lodge, or anywhere in Wrangell. But if you’re looking for a good clean room and an honest good host, I recommend the Sourdough Lodge.
