Maybe the problem is that we expected a lot more than we got, I don't know. What I do know is that we didn't get what we paid for.
The B&B has several websites that say different things. geocities.com/lakehousevaldez/ states it's on the shores of Robe Lake. When we drove up we estimated that it is a solid 2 miles from the water with no obvious way to get there directly. I will admit that the view out of the sitting room window is very nice.
The other website cvinternet.net/~devens/index.php shows more views of the inside of the house, mostly of rooms that guests do not have access to. The first thing you will notice when you walk through the house is that it creaks and moans like a pirate ship. The house is very old and in disrepair. The big room on the top right of the page was ours and it looks nothing like that now. They have substuted the beadspread for a deep red one that clashes badly with the green carpet, They threw out the window treatments and opted for plain cheap mini blinds. The windows have no screens so the mosquitoes force you to keep them tightly shut at all times. Keep the blinds pulled also because the room faces the scrap lumber pile unless you stand on your luggage and peer out of the bathroom window, then you can see a mountain beyond the satelite dish. The wall paper in the photo is gone because they painted...everything...moulding, trim, outlets, switches and some of the carpet. Oh yeah, the light switch is missing the know yso you have to grip the stem and turn it. I didn't ask if they furnish pliers for this task so bring your own to be safe. The floor is sagging so badly that you feel like you're in a fun house and as a result the doors won't shut unless you body slam them. Buried in the website it states there is no phone in the room, this may be because the phone outlet has been ripped out of the wall and is hanging by its wires. Also no tv, thank goodness the 1970 vintage lamp shown in the pic is still there. The Bathroom, oh god, where do I start? The water pressure will not support brushing your teeth and flushing the toilet at the same time.drip, drip, drip. The vanity is about to crumble and the sinktop just sits loose and askew on top. The truck stop-ish soap dispenser on the wall was empty which is too bad because if it worked, a skillful person might be able to make it shoot a stream of soap into the shower thereby killing the mold which grows there.
We retired to the sitting room to unwind, if you go be careful to not trip over the tv cord strung across the carpet from room to room (not our room). The room is stocked with all manner of curious antiques and a impressive vintage book collection. Stern orders were issued to not touch any of it because they are very rare and expensive. The clock ticked incessantly...
Breakfast the next morning was just as described, serve yourself continental breakfast. The only warm food was whatever you could cram in the toaster. The main problem with breakfast was the house will hold about 15 guests at full capacity and the table seats only 8.
Hospitality - We were looking forward to talking with the owner because he was Mayor of Valdez during the oil spill and highly regarded inthe community. That should have made for some interesting stories. We never saw him. We only saw the management twice for a few minutes each, once when we checked in and next when we checked out early. We spent our second night at the Totem Inn in town, a very nice place.
Overall this Lake house B&B gets failing marks from me.
While it does deliver exactly what it advertises in some areas, in other areas it falls way short and even misleads. It certainly is not worth $140 a night. On this trip we stayed at B&B's for the first time, about 6 different ones. They all were very nice and we left with a very positive experience...except for this one. This was a really bad experience and I really struggle to find any good things to say about it.
I will say that I stopped in at The Brookside Inn looking for a room for our second night. Unfortunately she was booked solid but the house looked awesome and she was very friendly. She gave me a bunch of help and let me use her phone to call other B&B's to find a vacantcy...while she cooked a full english breakfast for her guests. Quite the contrast.
