“Like a fairy tale”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2011

We arrived at the hotel after flying a red-eye from Poland, so we were exhausted. They put us in rooms quite quickly, giving us a very good room. I'm still wondering if it is because we are Americans, traveling with a Polish group, though. :) It doesn't matter, I appreciate the wonderful location of the room--near the restaurant, beach and unheated pool.

Our room seemed huge. Someone suggested 50m2, though maybe not that big. The bathroom was large as well. We slept well. The beds were not too hard (sometimes at some of these resorts, the beds are like rocks). We managed to get up and make it to breakfast before it ended at 10 am.

The food was good, though not great. Breakfast was pretty similar the whole week with choices like French toast, some sort of pink meat that wasn' t ham (??), and of course, omelets. Each day someone made omelets for us, so I chatted with the person making them. Usually we had cheese, tomatoes, and onions to add to the one or two eggs you could get. While the griddle was a bit hotter than I'd prefer, the eggs were good. There was always cut up fruit which was mainly honeydew melon and apples and what looked like yogurt. I didn't even notice everything since I headed for the eggs and breads and fruit. The breads...yum. Croissants--plain and with chocolate drizzled over it, filled pastries with just a dab of fruit or a cream/puding type of filling. They were always made fresh. The juices, quasi, were pineapple, hibiscus, or orange. Always very cold, which I liked. You could also serve yourself from the soft drinks at breakfast if you wanted. They had tea and coffee, too, though I'm not a a hot drink drinker.

The others meals had a good variety of foods and each day was different from the next. We were very pleased. Even the Egyptian beef, which IMO, isn't usually very good was "okay to good" here.

The grounds were gorgeous in January. The flowers were in full swing and the scenery really could hardly be better. I compared our grass to other hotels when we picked up and dropped off people and ours was the best in the area of the hotels we went into. :)

Because the rooms are made up of several smaller duplex type buildings, it was scattered about. The place is quite large and you get some exercise walking from one end to the other. My kids spent some time at the heated pool, which was not really close to our room, so we hiked over there to swim.

The wind was strong in January, so even at 22C, it wasn't too warm. But it was beautiful.

The guys working the various bars were very helpful and esp. the big pool's bar. I had asked for Diet Coke the first day and they had none, but they got some in the second day of our stay and so I was able to drink that for the rest of the time. I fail to understand why they didn't fill the machines which were self-serve, however, since there was a slot for it. Maybe it had to do with the political crisis going on.

We went right during the beginning of the upheaval in Egypt. While we were there, no one at the hotel would have known that anything was going on except that the guys who had the various small stores all had their tvs turned on to the news to watch what was going on in Cairo. They assured us that in the vacation resort areas, however, things were calm. And they were.

All the hotels in Marsa Alam are pretty isolated from anything like a town. Because the complex of the Kahramana is so large, we had a bit of shopping right "on site" and really didn't have to go off to find scarves, film, flippers, goggles, etc. Because the Habbiba resort right next door was also part of the G & B complex, we could have used their pool as well, but we didn't need to.

The cleaning guy didn't know how to make animals or very many flowers with the towels though. As silly as it is, that was my biggest and ONLY disappointment in this hotel/trip. Overall, it was really relaxing and wonderful.

“nice hotel”

My husband and I stayed here from 14th to 21st October 2010. We wanted a quiet hotel with direct access to good snorkelling.

The snorkelling is direct off the beach to the protected coral reefs and we have many super photos as the water is very clear and visibility excellent.

The temperature was HOT - 36 degrees most days.

We also took a half day trip booked with the Dive Centre at the hotel to Abu Dabbab which is only 20 mins up the coast to snorkel with the turtles that live in the bay. We saw about 6 or 8 large turtles but no sign of the alleged Dugong (Sea Cow/Manatee). You can take a taxi from the hotel for 20Euro each.

The hotel was excellent, room provided everything the description quoted, was extremely clean and comfortable. Staff are very polite and helpfull. The gardens are very well maintained.

Food - Restaurant was very busy (dinner served between 7 and 10pm). If you can avoid going at 7pm it will be quieter once all the families have eaten and put their kids to bed. There was also a BBQ every night and that was excellent, otherwise hotel buffet provides a good selection of hot cooked meals, pasta station, salad bar, soup, breads and many cakes/desserts.

I thought it was excellent value for money and would like to go back again

“Very good Hotel”

The Hotel
Marsa Alam proper is actually about 25 miles from airport airport
its No1 status in the area. The rooms are in larger blocks set around smaller gardens the food (I was all inclusive ) was very good for a buffet-style restaurant and catered for every possible taste you can imagine with Western and Eastern dishes, a daily barbeque and very friendly and attentive service. Cleanliness in the eating areas (and everywhere else) was of a very high standard.

Airport and transfers
Kahramana is, quite literally, 30 minutes from the airport so transfers are not a problem. On the return journey mine was the only international flight out and so the experience was A LOT less fraught that Hurghada, Sharm or Taba. In fact the airport is pretty good for what it is (small), with a pizza restaurant, Costa Coffee, and Ice Cream parlour as well as a proper Duty Free making the experience pretty painless.
Other
Everyone seems happy to accept non-Egyptian money although I think it works out cheaper to buy/haggle in Egyptian money!
All in all if you want a quiet holiday and/or to dive I’d definitely give this the thumbs-up!

“Delegate: "It's 3 years old 5 star hotel. Good hotel." - bad joke”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

Storyline
We were in group of 13 people supposed to go into Crowne Plaza(3 yr. old, 5* ) but travel agency (SATUR - thanks, no more) screw
it up and sent us to this "equal" hotel. We had no other option, we learned it after landing.
I do not pretend we weren't disappointed by this change but we could not travel
back home so easily so we kept complaining and hoped for soon change. Agency actually lied us before we left for vacation till the landing at home :-(.

Both places has 5* (but Kahramana does not have certificate, as resort manager told me, it's what travel agency assigned them), the same money is being asked for (unbelievable!) and we visited also Crowne Plaza for short while to have a look. So i can compare with my expectations. You can google around for a pictures of crowne plaza marsa alam.

Food
hard to describe...check the pictures
vegetables were like a week old
pasta was too soft, meat was too hard
I would say bad chef cooked from low quality stuff.
On some occasions we were able to eat only bread.

Services
people here are simply unskilled workers. Some are really rude, some are lazy, some are not present when
you need them and some simply ignore you.
I think, 90% of people working in resort don't like their job and knows nothing about their job.
They are not present on the place in their working hours (not for 5, but more than 15 minutes).
Nearby is a clinic, i think doctor charges 50 euro for any treatment.

Reception
chaotic, doing 4-5 things at once. Wifi is 25 Euro/week (cant be less). The PC with dial up is 5 Euro/hour but terribly slow. PC is available starting at 15.00.

Room
Terrible, check the pictures. I can accept old furniture and other stuff but cleanliness is a must. Already in 3 star hotel.
No bugs, no dirt. This is not a tent in Kenya.
People stays in houses of four rooms. Houses are not of Arabic style but more of Flintstones :-). Ok, not important but you can make a picture.

Facilities
This resort is around 15 years old (hopefully not more).
Tables in main restaurant has corrosion as they are from iron.
2 pools are average. Playgrounds for beach volleyball, tennis, football are of poor quality.
Fitness facility we did not use.
Drinking water is available only between 7 and 23.00 then they will lock it in the fridge.

Entertainment
There is no night life, no people sitting out till 2 am with bottle of red wine, no city nearby.
Last restaurant in resort is closing between 23.00 - 24.00
Some people went diving which was the best choice i think.
And Luxor is only 5 hours driving away.

Area
If sea is quiet, it's very nice for snorkeling. Corals are alive, question is how long yet.
The "famous" abu dabab beach where you can travel from resort is dirty.

Result
I might go to Egypt again, but not to this hotel, this area and via this agency.
Hope they return money at least...

“Good and clean hotel with plenty variety of food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2010

We stayed in this hotel last week and we had a great time. With over 200 rooms, the hotel is rather large but you hardly notice that because it is spread out over a very large area and buildings are never higher that three storeys. From our room to the dinner area and beach it was about 400m and to the reception about 700m. So if you forget to take something from your room (sun lotion, diving mask) it is a bit of a walk (and it can be really hot!!). Luckily they have a service to transfer your luggage from the reception to your room and vice versa.
The hotel is located right at the beach. Although the beach itself is sandy, the first 100m into the water is rocky and sometimes a bit sharp (coral). It is also quite shallow so most of the time, really swimming is not possible. After 100m, there is a coral reef after which it suddenly becomes much deeper. The hotel, however, has a pier bringing you right on top of the coral reef which is really quite nice. So at least bring your diving mask. On the down side, the time we were there it was often not allowed to go into the water from the pier due to too much wind. It felt to us they were a bit over cautious because the wind was not really that strong. In effect, half of the time we were not allowed to go from the pier. For the rest, it is a great place for snorkeling.
The whole hotel is very clean. This includes the rooms, the dinner area, the pool, the pool side etc. and the staff is really making an effort to keep it clean. The room we had (I believe this was the cheapest one) was spacious, clean and quiet during the night.
During our stay we choose the all-inclusive formula. This was offered in the form of a buffet three times per day. The food was good with sufficient variety over the days. Also the dinner area looked very clean and all the food looked very fresh. One negative point: of the 7 dinners we had, 6 were European style dishes while we would have liked to have a bit more local Egyptian dishes. The staff working around the dinner area was friendly but a bit timid (which is fine with us). The service they provided was good as they often reacted promptly to our requests.
Overall, if you are looking for sun, beach, snorkeling and a good rest, this is a place we would recommend. If your looking for night life, we did not found any. Also, if you do not move around easily (e.g. in a wheelchair) this hotel is not the place to go (long distances, many stairs, etc.) For the rest, a very nice hotel.
