I absolutely LOVE the Talkeetna Roadhouse. I have stayed here twice with family.
It is a perfect home away from home, and probably one of the cosiest places on earth.
It is a restaurant and hotel with shared bathrooms. Everything has a very personal touch. There are different books in each bedroom from Dr. Seuss to the Fall of the Roman Empire. There are two living room couch/nook areas to curl up and read by the fire. They also have a game table with a variety of board games and a tv with an adorable collection of VHSs for any guest to watch and a piano with an assortment of sheet music. My favorite thing is that they have hot coffee/tea/hot chocolate 24/7 for guests. When I was a student, I pulled an almost all nighter writing a paper during vacation at the Roadhouse, and it was actually made enjoyable in this atmosphere. More recently, it was lovely to have a steady source of tea to accompany afternoon and before bedtime reading and web surfing.
The staff is also very friendly and helpful.
The also have a restaurant that is open for guests and those not staying as guests. It can get full at breakfast, or when the Princess Tours come through town, but the food is delicious, especially the baked goods and the PIES!
The one downside is that the walls are quite thin - at least in the upstairs rooms. It isn't a problem except if you are unfortunate to have a snorer in another room while you are staying. So bring ear plugs!
Amenities: They have a computer for guests to use. They also have wifi if you bring your own. 24/7 tea/coffee/hot chocolate. Games and movies to play and watch. An on-site restaurant. Shared baths, but still personalized with a bathtub/shower and conditioner and shampoo provided.
Especially feels like heaven after emerging from the Alaska wilderness.
The surrounding town is also a fun destination. I wouldn't spend more than a day or two here, but it's a good home base if you are traveling around the area. There is a brewery, a nice used bookstore, some other great restaurants, local events, a nice walk by the river, and plenty of shopping for tourists in the two main streets that make up Talkeetna.
