I stayed in Ashburton only because of the earthquake damage in central Christchurch. The Hotel Ashburton is in the process of major refurbishment and I had one of the older rooms, which looked a little tired but was clean and comfortable none the less. The hotel was busy and the buffet dinner was served in one of the function rooms. The meal was actually more enjoyable than I had expected from the temporary appearance of the surroundings. The bar was unable to provide a bottle of mineral water to take to the bedroom, which was surprising. My impression was that the hotel was trying hard to cope with the increased business it was bringing in and was investing heavily in refurbishment. For a one night stay it was perfectly adequate.
