My husband and I spent 9 nights in Alaska this August on a long-awaited "trip of a lifetime" only we will be doing it again and as soon as possible. The first 5 nights we stayed at the lodge and enjoyed some world class fishing for Salmon and Trout on the Kenai and other rivers nearby. We were impresed with the professionalism and skill level of the guides - they were the best guides we've ever encountered and truly love their work, which makes for a very enjoyable and successful trip each day. We fished in drift boats and power boats and toured the Moose River by kayak. We caught more than our limit in salmon every trip and the 2 of us caught 30 Rainbow Trout one day while viewing local moose, eagles, ducks, swans, and even a lynx! The staff are also very nice and anxious to please. The first day, we arrived at lunchtime, were fed, briefed, and sent out on our first fishing excursion. Every evening at happy hour we would meet other guests, share stories and meet our guide for the next day. Once we were scheduled to fish offshore for halibut but the seas were rough and we asked to cancel that trip and go back out on the river. Before we could even ask, plans were made for us to do just that; no problem, no hassle. The lodge property is well maintained and clean, the dining room is cozy and the food is good (not great though, we expected better) and the cabins and rooms are 'campy'. The beach guide is great; he builds campfires each evening and helps guests learn to fly fish right outside of their cabins. He even cooked a fresh caught Sockeye for my birthday and served smores too! We practiced a technique called 'flossing' which landed us a few nice salmon! The only part of the trip that was dissappointing to us was the accomodations - they could definitely use improvement, but for the fishing, we will go back. The weather was nice for us, so we didn't stay in our rooms much. I see others felt the same way, so maybe they'll upgrade the rooms a bit? But, if fishing is your main concern, make sure you do it here!
Now, for the rest of the trip. We left with a guide to travel north to sightsee and take in some interesting stops on our way to Talketna and then Denali. He took care of us the whole time, making sure every minute was spent enjoying Alaska and sharing all of his favorite stops. We had a customized tour with a very special guide who made traveling a real pleasure. During this part of our trip we saw salmon spawning, met an ermine up close (cute but not always nice, we're told), panned for gold, visited museums, saw glaciers, hung out in Talketna, walked on the beach, toured the Denali by bus, and flew around the Mt. McKinley area to get a close view of a truly magnificent mountain. After two days and nights of touring we headed back to Anchorage via the Alaskan Railroad and saw more amazing scenery from a glass-topped train car which had excellent food and was roomy and comfortable - a do over! The bus trip out of Denali was too long, but it seems to be the only way to see inside the park. We were glad we flew in because a full day of the bus would have been awful. We did see the famous Dall Sheep and a few caribou and enjoyed the beauty of the plantlife as the fall colors were starting to show.
All in all, it was a wonderful experience and we will return. Next time I'm going to the Bear Camp and my husband is going offshore fishing and we'll try to see the Kenai Fjords, but not before we tire ourselves of casting and catching!
