This was a Saxon dwelling and it just oozes charm. Our room was at the back on the first floor, via a little stairway and every room is a bit different. We did only stay for one night, which I was pleased about, because the room was a bit too basic for my liking. On the plus side, they did have free wi-fi. On the other hand, there was no aircon, just a fan perched rather precariously on top of the telly. Given the age of the building, you'd have to expect this. However, there were other problems that would be easily remedied. For example, the curtains were hung proud of the wall and yet were barely as wide as the window, so there was a large gap either side of the curtains on both windows. The windows looked out onto a walkway to other rooms, meaning that other guests could look in easily to the view of our bed, which with no aircon, we slept on top of. Luckily we were able to pin the curtains back on to the window ledge with some books and preserve our modesty!
The wardrobe and bedside tables definitely looked the part, in dark heavy wood, but on two of them the handles came off when you pulled the door open, so that wasn't brilliant.
The room did have a fridge which we appreciated.
The bathroom was pretty horrible and I feel that it could have been made nice without ruining the building. There was only one light, over the sink which only had a titchy shelf. The shower wasn't very strong and it was fitted to the wall so high I could only reach it by stretching my arm right up (ok I'm 1m56 so I'm short, but I'm not a midget, I should be able to reach the shower). Also, it was fitted almost flat to the wall so the the jet went almost straight foward and just about met my head sideways if I stood as far away as I could. Without the shower curtain I think it would have hit the floor somewhere outside the bathroom door!
Breakfast was nice enough, quite small, but then the hotel doesn't have many rooms, so you'd expect that.
So, overall, I liked staying there the one night, but I prefer to get my charming period experience out and about in the city and then stay somewhere with a few creature comforts. If I'd been staying longer I would not want it to be in this hotel.
