This superb hotel, located on the banks of the Hau branch of the Mekong River, successfully creates the illusion of a French colonial outpost of yore, even though it dates only to 1999. We stayed at two Victoria hotels during an eight-day cycling trip through the Mekong Delta, and this one edged out its older sibling at Can Tho (which is also superb), thanks to consistenly great service and an outstanding restaurant. This is the kind of hotel where staff come flying out of nowhere just to open a door for you. On arrival, guests are greeted by hotel staff offering cool towels and delicious herb and citrus drinks (welcome in the hot, humid Delta), and from then on are in the hands of friendly professionals. While rooms are not large, they are gorgeously appointed, with hardwood floors, elegant ceramics displayed on illuminated shelves, and smart marble bathrooms. Ask for one overlooking the river rather than the town (lots of loud motorbikes go by constantly). At nightly turndown, the housekeeper leaves fresh-baked cookies in little boxes woven from coconut leaves. Beds are extremely comfortable, air conditioning silent and effective, and everything immaculate. And the hotel's Bassac restaurant offers outstanding cuisine, beautifully served (we enjoyed buffalo filet with an elegant port wine sauce). Bassac is easily the most expensive restaurant in town, but two can have an excellent meal for less than US$50. There is a smallish but pleasant outdoor pool overlooking the river, where you may have drinks and watch the river traffic go by. The hotel is within walking distance to Chau Doc's interesting market and some good eating places (try the very good, inexpensive Bay Bong 2--the desk can direct you). Though it's a splurge, especially in a fairly workaday small city, the Victoria's intimacy and grace made it well worth a two-night stay and a highlight of our trip. In all, its polish and friendliness, without a hint of corporate blandness, made staying at Victoria Chau Doc a real treat. Highly recommended.
