“Excellent location, very friendly staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2009

We have just returned from 15 nights at the Sandy Beach Resort in Lighthouse Beach Kovalam Kerala. This hotel is in an excellent location(just behind the German Bakery/Lighthouse Restaurant) and is small, friendly, clean and has very helpful and friendly staff.

On first arrival to Lighthouse Beach we were slightly confused as the Taxi driver seemed to just be taking us to the beach and not our hotel, but after asking some locals we found that there isn't an actual road that runs straight to the hotel and you have to walk along the beach path (which could be a problem for people with lots of luggage or who have trouble walking). Once at our hotel we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful and our room was large and clean.

There are only about 12 rooms in the hotel, no pool and breakfast is served outside in the garden, which is lovely. We stayed in room 201 which is on the corner and seemed to be the only room with a private balcony. The room had everything you would need (except air conditioning) and a safe (for which you need your own padlock). The bathroom had an open shower which pointed at the toilet which meant that the toilet got wet whenever the shower was on, but this wasn't a big problem!

Getting to the beach and restaurants was a minute walk, which is very convenient for popping back during the day and returning at night. The area was well lit at night. Lighthouse Beach is not that big (unlike Goa) and all the restaurants and bars close at 11pm! This isn’t very good if you are looking for some nightlife! Alcohol is also illegal as well as smoking!

The Beach was ok (we thought the beaches in Goa were a lot nicer!) the sand was black and the sea was very rough. Unlike Goa the sun loungers are not part of the beach shacks, so you have to pay for these (we paid 150 rupees a day for 2 loungers and an umbrella and a couple of dogs!) At the time there was also some work being carried out along the beach but it wasn’t that much of a disruption. Sunbathing on the beach got a bit tiresome after a couple of hours as there are many people trying to sell you fruit every 15 minutes and we found the worse thing to do was to be polite to the sellers and this just meant they came back more! Also a lot of the locals walk up and down the beach staring at you lying sunbathing! As I was on holiday with my boyfriend this tended to deter them hovering for too long, but single women sunbathing seemed to attract a crowd and they often took pictures or stood watching while you swam in the sea.

There were many lovely restaurants along Lighthouse Beach(Wave/German Bakery and Cafe Del La Mar were definitely worth a trip back) all the staff were great and couldn't do enough to please. There was a great variety of foods too, lots of veggie food and sea food.

We took a couple of trips. Neyyaar Wildlife Sanctuary was good and on the way back we asked our taxi driver to take us to see the elephants (roughly 10 minutes from Neyyaar) which was fantastic and extremely cheap (10 rupees each to see the elephants or 200 to ride an elephant). The elephants seemed to be well treated and the keepers really caring. We took a trip to Poovar Beach, on the advice of a Taxi Driver, it was awful! lots of locals crowding round a very mucky dirty beach asking for money. We also travelled to Agatti Island (Ladshadweep) which was so beautiful and definitely worth it. We booked this whilst on holiday but you can do it form home and it would be a lot easier. We got a taxi form Kovalam to Cochin and then a ship for 24 hours to the Ladshadweep Islands and flew back to Cochin Airport (if you can we would recommend flying both ways as the ship is a 24 hour journey and very strange!)

All in all this hotel is a great place to stay for the money! It could do with having a pool, but the beach is so close it was ok. An excellent location and great staff!

Hotel you get what you pay for,the friendly staff and 1st class service come free.
haveing had breakfast on two occassions I will leave it to the crows you can eat in any other place(JUST AROUND THE CORNER)for about 100rups(£1.30) for full english, poetic license given.the beach is ok apart from the hawkers they became a problem after the 100th time each day also if eating out dont sit on the front row of tables unless you want to share your food with some one pushing goods for sale over your plate( I was told this was not a commercial area dont beleave it).Not we go to the trips rice boat over nightsaw many other craft(The broards in july) no wild life to be seen
to much traffic.Lands end trip a long way to look at a plaque .my lasting memory will be the trip at the start of return journey (book your own taxi please)a walk through narrow alley ways at 0510hrs take a torch all uphill on unmade walk ways with the local night life RATS running around your feet not my way to end the holiday. Then you arrive at the airport the nightmare begins two hours toget through to the plane then 11 1/2 hour trip back to the uk,sorry but give me goa any time

“Good Hotel, brilliant location”

Flight
The flight there was good.
The flight back was a nightmare mainly because of the endless queues in the airport, you wont believe it until you see it, chaos.

Hotel
Although this is just a one star hotel, this is purely down to the lack of facilities, ie no pool etc. The hotel is located more or less on the front, about a 1 minute walk down a lane. This hotel and the Hawah hotel have the best in terms of hotels located on the front. The location is superb. Golden Sands and Park International are up a very steep hill, wouldnt fancy that a couple of times a day.
There are not many rooms in the hotel about 12 or 14. The staff are really friendly i.e. hand your keys to you as you come back on a night time.
We stayed in room 103 on the ground floor and thought it was fine. Each room has a little balcony with some chairs to sit out on. The rooms obvioulsy have beds and a wardrobe. The bathroom is like a walk in shower which I quite liked. There is also a safe in the room, which is not mentioned in the Thomas cook brochure. Do make sure you take a padlock with you though as otherwise you will not be able to lock it.
We only had breakfast once as the lie ins were more appealing for me. Most people seemed to get up for breakkie though. Breakfast is served between 7.30 and 10am. The options are tea/coffee, eggs (any type) and 4 pieces of toast with butter and jam. The garden area is quite nice is you wanted to sit there on an afternoon. There is also a TV upstairs above recpetion. We didnt use the tv though.
There is an internet and money change shop next door to the hotel which was really handy. I think it was 30 rupees for 45 minutes.
Trips
We booked the trips through Emma the rep in the hotel as it was easier. There are quite alot of travel companies about. The internet guy next door offers trips etc.
We booked the following trips
Golden Hills - Unfortunately we didnt end up going on the trip due to illness
Watercolours - This is a boat cruise on one of the lakes followed by another boat ride. Approx £30pp. Quite a good trip to do.7/10
Lands End - You visit 2 palaces and the most southern point of India. Quite a good trip but be prepared for a long long day. We left about 8am and got back about 10pm. The bus journey is a bumpy one due to the roads. 6/10
Elephant Fiesta - This is a once a year event I believe and was fantastic. 10/10

Overall I would say that Kerala is place to go is you want to realx. The weather and food were good and the hotel was good.

I dont imagine we would visit kerala again, mainly because we have been there and done it, but having visited here we would probably visit a different part of India.

If you are considering staying at this hotel but are concerned because it is only a one star, dont be. The hotel is clean and is really well located. For a budget hotel this would be my choice every time.

Hotel 9/10

“Loved Kovalam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2008

We have just returned from a fortnights holiday at the Sandy Beach Resort Hotel in Kovalam. Although the hotel is very basic it is very clean and the staff are great. We had a fantastic time and can't wait to return. The rooms are basic but are kept very clean and the staff clean and change sheets and towels daily. They even offer a small laundry service which was very cheap but efficient!! The garden is a cool oasis where you can have your breakfast in the morning and the peace is only broken when the resident crows join you!! Kovalam has everything that you could need and the maze of back streets are a delight and the locals are very kind and friendly if not slightly persistent! Be warned you can be talked into buying an entire wardrobe complete with sandals made just for you!! Relax and enjoy the Keralan experience
