We reached Kovalam with a lot of expectations about this hotel, but were completely shocked to see the hotel looked nothing like what I had seen in the pics. Our first impression was that we had been completely duped. Also, when we were there to check in, there was no power in the hotel, and the reception manager seemed in a bit too much of hurry to have us checked in. I insisted that I will check in once power is back in 10-15 mins (which he claimed) as I had read too many horror stories about no power in some of the Kerela hotels. In the meanwhile we were shown our room, which was just about ok. On telling them that we expected a better room, we were promptly shown a couple of more rooms to choose from, and we did find one of them quite nice (right in front of the pool though it still had a non functional bath tub) and checked in (power was also back in the meanwhile and didn't give us anymore problems throughout our stay of 2 nights).
Once we went up the property, we realised that it was a huge property and the picture displayed everywhere on the internet was indeed of the same hotel, though of an upper section. Once you go up the hotel, the feel of the hotel definitely improves by a couple of notches. There is a nice little pool on what i would call a mezannine level roof as there are a few floors above that too. The sea view was also quite amazing especially in the morning and during sunset. Though a point to mention would be that the hotel is not on the tip of the sea, and seaview is a bit distant and visible due to the height of the hotel. The view is especially good from the its rooftop restaurant. The nearest sea beach is about 7-8 mins walk from the hotel through soem short cuts (which did not seem very safe at night though).
The quality of food and the service in general is not much to write home about and strictly very okayish. The spread of the breakfast seemed very limited. Also, there seemed a severe lack of staff, and on enquiry we were told that this was temporary as most of the staff were busy as some close relative of the owner had died, and they were attending there. A good point for them that whatever little staff were there, seeemd polite and were trying to help us as much as possible.
All in all a nice stay slightly off the busy section of the town, but do not expect a five star service or food. if you want a calm stay at a decent price, you can definitely go for this property.
Room Tip: Try to get a room on the upper floors of the hotel, as that would give you the best view of the beac...
