“Did not stay overnight but visited the Ayurvedic Spa - Its a let down!!!”

I did not stay in the resort, but visited their Ayurvedic Spa for massage.

First to talk about the resort, its built on a highland which gradually goes down to the beach. Huts of different categories are built on steps of the highland. The approach
of the resort is little confusing as there is another one with the same name adjacent to the main one (as we were told), courtesy family division. The reception looks okay with tons of tropies won by the resort since 2000 from the GOI.

Though we were booked a 2pm slot but it took almost 30 mins to get an appointment with the consultant and then another 30 mins to get the massage.

This is the only resort which was recommended by all in Kovalam for Ayurvedic Massage and we got a mailer from the resort with all teh options for 1 hr, 2 hrs, 3 days, 7 days etc.

But when we finally settled with the consultant its only 1 hr which was suggested as I could guess that they are usually busy with inhouse guests who come there for weeklong ayurvedic treatments. So the other options are basically not applicable though mentioned in the brochure.

Now with the Ayurvedic massage - the process was good and the masseur was good too (educated from Ayurvedic College and trained). But what was not at all expected was the poor hygine condition. The room used for the massage had cob webs, soiled cloth, dirty mat....over all the room was cluttered with things here and there and most of it was not clean.

Also the privacy was not maintained as sometimes while resting on the mat with oil all over, the masseur will keep walking in and out. Its little embarrasing and not relaxing for sure.

Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort is running a legitimate Ayurveda hospital within the resort, where our clients are in- house guests who stays for 7- 30 days or more. We do not encourage Walk-in customers in our hospital as our programs are serious Ayurvedic Treatments than just a massage. We run our hospital with a team of 20 doctors, it’s not a spa. This is a Green Leaf certified Ayurveda Hospital by the Government. We keep clear medical records of all our clients, including clients taking a single therapeutic massage. According to our records, there is no one matches the description of the traveler neither stayed in the hotel nor visited the hospital.
There is another resort called Somatheeram Ayurvedic Health Resort, which suits the description of the property. So the client might have misunderstood the trip advisor profile and wrongly added the comment.
Somatheeram Ayurvedic Health is not our competitor, but share the same name (mentioned in the review). They received awards since 2000 and are displayed in their reception (as mentioned in the review). Our resort is also recognized with several National and International Awards. Somatheeram Health Resort is set up on a hillock towards the beach. (as mentioned in the review) Our Hotel is situated on a cliff overlooking the sea. With all these facts it is understood that the traveler misunderstood the profile by similar property name.

Very Good Ayurvedic Massage on a relaxed resort location. Massages are really good. Worth the money
We stayed in one of the seperate huts at the other side of the entrance. There were good and at that side you had you had no noise from the restaurant.
Problem for the future can be that it's becoming more a place for normal rich tourists than a Ayurvedic place where it's know for.
That will and sometimes already is anoying for people who come for relaxation.
For example if they have a special event in restaurant they demand you to pay around 50 to 60 euro's extra p.p.(while you are all inclusive) for eating that evening while you don't want to eat because you are not allowed for the reatment you get. Not a joke they come by more than 5 times to the room to tell we had to pay. (Staff orderd by manager)
Anyway it is a good resort but wondering if this will stay for Ayurvadic treatment.
Don't trust the male manager. If you want to book things outside the resort check on internet first if it's correct what he is telling.
Beach is good but dangerous waves. Morning full with fisherman coming form sea

“Simply the best.”

I am a very discerning hotel guest with lots of 5 star stays in many parts of the world, but Somatheeram is in a different league. While their actual rooms are far from Western 5 star standard, they make up for it with their excellent service, their heavenly location, their wonderful food and their absolutely professional, highly effective and super- relaxing treatments and massages. Go there if you want to rejuvenate, cleanse, lose weight and generally rebalance yourself. If you want a decent room, book at least "Special Cottage" category, the "Standard Cottages" and especially the rooms in the Annex can be a bit of a disappointment.

“Relaxing and fun”

I had an excellent time at Somatheeram. It was a fun experience to meet with an Ayurvedic doctor who diagnosed my dosha and prescribed certain herbs and a specific diet while I was there. I found the food to be excellent (all vegetarian) and the accomodations were high quality. The service was at the level of a 5* resort anywhere in the world where I never carried a bag, had access to room service and a concierge, and was always greeted politely and asked if there was anything I needed. With the combination of yoga classes, exploring the beach, the spa treatments and eating the meals, my days were quite full. I also enjoyed leaving the resort and exploring the nearby town. The yoga offered here is at a very introductory level, so if you are a serious yoga practitioner do not expect to enjoy or expand your practice. I actually found myself skipping classes after a while because some of the instructions were contrary to what I believed and I was afraid of injury. Otherwise this is an excellent resort, a great base to locate yourself while exploring this area of India.

“Does what it says on the package”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

A very pleasant place to stay. Warm welcome and attentive staff who are polite and smile often. The Ayurvedic treatment is competently delivered under the close supervision of doctors. Treatment staff extremely curteous. They do their job well. By no means cheap when all is taken into account. Ayurvedic treatments were 51 Euro each. An hour on the bus to Trivandrum. A bit isolated. The beach below the resort is interesting because of the fishing communities that work from it. The ocean rolls in hard and it is not pleasant to swim from. There is access to a pool. The hotel makes every effort to ensure there is an evening enterainment in the restaurant, music or dance.
