We were seeing Alaska by car, and decided to drive from Fairbanks to Valdez. Paxson was a nice stop along the way, and so we settled on Denali Highway cabins kind of by default (not much else in that area). Nevertheless, they were a great find. The hosts have done a great job re-creating an upscale B&B feel, with nice furnishings and details in the cabins and a beautiful great room. The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is that Audie made it really clear that he would not be pleased if our kids (9 & 14) did anything that might potentially soil his beautiful place. We had to take our shoes off indoors and the kids were not allowed in the great room alone. We only stayed one night, so we didn't mind, but if we had stayed longer it could have gotten stressful worrying about the place.

Horrible hosts!! Very fixed on their comfort ..not at all flexible.

1/ We had booked the place atleast a week before we landed in Paxon. We were driving south from Fairbanks and were getting a little late ..like 7 pm ... not too late for Alaska and had to have our dinner too before we could check in. They started calling us around 6 pm every 20 mins to check as to when exactly we would reach them which was quite annoying.

2/ This was worst .. After we had just checked out (it had been only 5 mins) ...remember we had just paid $160/night .. I wanted to use the restroom before we headed out ...this being thinly populated place made even more sense to use it here at the lodge. Guess what... They directed me 30 MILES SOUTH to a gas station and use it there. It took me few mins to digest that they were really not kidding. Thank god I have good holding power but if u have a weak heart (as you can have a heart attack if you hold too long) or if you have kids ... Get your own mobile loo... As you can't expect them to help you!!

Cabins are new and the Great Room a pleasant spot to veg.
On Audie's advice took a short hike (< 1 mile) to Swan lake and saw 7 moose, 2 where on the path we were on. What a rush.
Again on his suggestion went to Tangle Lake Inn for dinner and had the best Halibut of of trip.

We stayed 2 nights in one of the tents. Although it was freezing at night, we had a perfect and warm bed. Each tent has its own bathroom and the shared living room is absolutely great. They serve a very nice homemade breakfast which is definitely recommendable.
