“A cabin with a view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

If you are looking for a place with character and a unique change from home, take a look. We stayed in the Seaside cabin and didn't regret it. It's perched with a glacier & sea view, and a beach just below. It's secluded and you really feel you are in your own little world. The definition of a cabin varies around Alaska- The sea shell cabin is not at the luxury end of the spectrum but this is it's charm. You have a double bed, wood burning stove (complete with logs and axe outside), table & chairs, huge windows to take in the view and candles as there is not electricity. The out house is just beside you and for showers and cooking you can use the facilities in the main building. It's so charming you just fall in love with it. It takes you miles away from you normal life back home.

“Beautiful views and nice farm setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

We camped for two nights and stayed in a cabin for a third for a bit of a treat. The grounds were beautiful. Pitching your tent in a grassy field overlooking glaciers with a short walk down to a stone beach and strolling around the working farm was great as was purchasing fresh eggs and greens. The cabin was very spacious and clean, but the main house where the bathroom was didn't look that well kept (note that the bathroom, showers and kitchen are not available to campers- they get outhouse access only). Great little fire pit with hammock complete with outdoor stove and sink for campers though. Met some interesting folks but the staff seemed non existent- all we saw were signs directing us where to go and what to do. A bit far from town if you don't have a car, but the peaceful setting is worth it.

“a magical place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2011

seaside farm is a magical place. with a spectacular view, friendly and great service, and even a working farm! a real alaskan experience. beautiful flowers blooming around and horses, chickens, and an adorable little calf are there to greet you as well as a friendly face from the wonderful manager who went above and beyond. i felt so comfortable and had an incredible stay here. fresh farm eggs and fresh greens from the garden are available daily. a well maintained trail to the beach and many different places you can choose to stay, from quaint and peaceful cabins, rooms in the main lodge, camping, and a hostel bunk room theres something for everyone, sometimes you can trade out a little work for your nights stay if theres any help needed around the farm. theres even a farm "shop" with raspberry jam made on the farm, teeshirts, and dvds of the story of the owners family and also alaskan bird dvds. i met incredible people and had the time of my life at seaside farm. id recommend it to anyone and ill for sure be back. if your planning on going to homer, stay at seaside farm, you wont be disappointed. you cant beat the view or the company at seaside farm!

“True Alaskan Experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2011

I absolutely loved my stay here and after reading a couple of the other 'negative' reviews, felt I had to respond. First of all, this is a working farm as well as a lodge/hostel. So if its 5 star hotel accommodation you're looking for, dont bother. Take your negative, closed mind and go stay in the city! This is a real Alaskan experience. That being said, the main house does have a feel of time standing still and walking in, is like stepping back into the 60's or 70's. Is that a bad thing? I found it to be spotlessly clean. After checking out the hostel below the main lodge/house, I found it to be a bit dark and dismal but sill clean. Truthfully, it would benefit from a few dollars and a touch of love being spent here and there. If I ever manage to get back there, I should like to stay in one of the little cabins that are perched on the bluff overlooking Kachemak bay. Stunning! This is the perfect retreat for some much needed R&R. Peaceful, beautiful and friendly folk to boot.

“FUNKY...and NOT in a good way!”

I've traveled all over the world (this includes what people consider third world countries). I'm stating this to give you some perspective on my review, as I've encountered the full spectrum of lodging options in my travels.

Yes, I've stayed in more than my share of hostels so I know what to expect. This being said, this is THE WORST lodging experience I've had in my life. Yes, the locations is spectacular (the views from the hostel are beautiful). The staff was friendly. These are the pluses.

The problem with this place is that both my husband, and I were attacked by BEDBUGS! I'm covered in red bumpy, angry welts. My face, neck, and arms are COVERED in these nasty bites. I've heard all the reports of this problem, but we got to experience the misery first-hand. It has been over a week since I got bitten up, and I look like I have some weird disease, and am itching up a storm.

Avoid this hostel. It's cheap for a reason! Oh BTW, we were in the Pinewood private room in the main house.

In the 35 years we have shared our little farm and home with travelers, this is the only complaint of this nature. Because of the current epidemic of these pests now threatening Alaska, we are going to great lengths to ensure that our family home is pest free for both our own peace of mind and of course, our guests!. We are currently using high tech monitoring equipment to ensure that the place is BEDBUG FREE.

Thankfully, most people (both young and old) are delighted with the magical experience of staying on a real Alaska pioneer farm, with animals, wildlife, singing birds, flower gardens, eagles soaring overhead, and beach walks in the evenings. They do not expect the usual amenities to be found at the chain hotels. Open up any one of the guest books to read pages filled with happy and romantic memories. That always makes our efforts feel worthwhile and my heart especially glad to share Seaside Farm with others.
