Haines Alaska is a beautiful and fairly isolated town. The Captain's Choice is a bit dated, but clean and the staff is very helpful. There is a new laundry facility for Motel guests which was very convenient. The motel serves a continental breakfast, but we chose to visit a nearby restaurant recommended by the front desk.

Located near the harbor, the setting is beautiful, and many rooms have views of the harbor and boat dock.

Captain's Choice Motel is definitely the best option in Haines.

We stayed two nights at the Captain's Choice, July 8 - 10th, and had a room with a seaview. The room was spacious, clean and the view was very special. The motel had an outdoor deck with tables and chairs overlooking the channel and this was truly magnificent.
We had a lunch picnic on the deck one day. The continental breakfast was good, the service and staff were excellent and there was good parking close to the room.
A wonderful place to stay in haines.

My husband and I travelling from England, stayed here during our tour of the Yukon and Alaska and I have noted there are some unfavourable comments on here about this motel but we can only speak about our experience which was very good. The people here were very friendly, both staff and people we met in the bar, even to the degree that they gave us menus from local restaurants so we could decide where we wanted to eat and as it was late evening called to make sure they were still open. Our room was fine, granted a bit dark due to the wood and dark carpet but it was clean, the bed comfortable, bathroom clean, usual coffee/tea making facilities, hairdryer & microwave. Although a non-smoking room it did smell a little of smoke but who knows someone could have been smoking in there when they shouldn’t have been. The view over the harbour was glorious, we were booked in for only one night which we felt was a pity as we could just imagine sitting on the balcony watching out across the harbour. Haines is surrounded by mountains, it is a very pretty place but if like us you drive there from Tok it is a very long drive, we had various timings given to us from hotel staff, and truckers which varied between 5 hours to 8 hours to 10 hours, it took 9 1/2 hours, it’s over 400 miles and the only open gas station (if you only have a car with no back up fuel) was at Haines Junction, you then have about another 3 hours or so left to go.

We stayed at Captain's two separate nights at the beginning and end of our Golden Circle road trip.

On the positive side, the staff was helpful in our reservations and then a change from original - always pleasant to deal with. We got the room at the end both nights with a private balcony like we requested.

The room was a nice size with sofa, table and chairs and patio furniture on the small deck which opened from sliding glass doors. We also had a microwave and frig. It's the only room with the private balcony. The immediate view was of alleys, back yards and roof tops, but over top of those was the harbor, water, and mountains beyond. That wasn't the greatest, but it was nice enough for downtown Haines.

The negative part was the dark room with worn and dirty furniture and carpet. The bathroom wasn't the cleanest either, due to poor housekeeping; the baseboards hadn't been cleaned in a while. Also, up in the lounge for breakfast (which wasn't anything to write home about), the toaster was dirty and the trash can flip lid had dried on food and drink spills. Housekeeping definitely needs some training at Captain's.

If we ever go to Haines again, we will be staying somewhere else; hopefully a private vacation rental.
