“Noisy.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2011

Cute little hostel and very clean. The staff was very friendly and the price very reasonable. My only beef was that the only other "private room" had only a flannel sheet for the door, and naturally that wouldn't "close" all the way. The doorway faces the entrance/sitting room/kitchen. The downstairs light is positioned right outside the door as well, so you can imagine what the lighting situation was like....It got loud when the three other people staying in the hostel got home from work and decided to sit down for a little chat, for about an hour. Granted, they were trying to be quiet, but when 3 people sit outside your door, carry on a conversation and microwave hot water for tea, you can guess how loud it gets. Not only that, but they were ignoring the 'lights out after 1200 am' courtesy-esque sign, the proprietor had put up. The other private room did have a door, so maybe that would be better if you can reserve it....

“Best hostel in our experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2008

This was by far the best hostel of the three we stayed at in Alaska (the other two were in Anchorage and near Denali National Park)--it's small relative to other hostels, but very tidy and very clean, attractively designed (the unfurnished logs for walls gave a woodsy feel to the place), and nicely tucked away into the mountains. My husband and I stayed in the private cabin--an extra plus, since it's small and cozy. The hostel owner said he was planning to expand the private cabin room to make it bigger. Highly recommended if you're looking to get away and enjoy a stellar hostel experience.

“Clean, Comfortable friendly and convenient”

Within 5 minutes of arriving at the hostel alone I was invited to join another group of travelers for dinner. You can't beat that for friendliness. The hostel is set back from Alyeska Highway in a quiet residential area, but it is only 15 mins walk to pubs, restaurants and shops. Nearby the Crow Creek pass and winner creek trail joining the Iditarod Trail should not be missed.
The hostel has a welcoming seating area with a book exchange,a small dining table and efficient kitchen area. The dormitory sleeps 9, including a double bunk for couples.
The private room (which I occupied) had a double bunk and upper single bunk. The bed was clean and comfortable and I had three excellent nights sleep. Linen is stored in the sitting room and on arrival you make up your own bunk. There are two bathrooms and there was always a plentiful supply of hotwater. A wooden deck outside is great place to sit on warmer days. The hostel is cleaned daily and the no shoes policy helps keep the mountains outside!. Excellent value for money at $40 for the private room (single). Bunks in the dorn are $20. The friendship, conversation and companionship is free....

“Mixed bag”

Good points:
- Good price for Girdwood
- Clean and well-maintained

Bad points:
- Only one bathroom (toilet and shower)
- The website says that the cabin has a toilet. FYI - that means a toilet located under one of the bunks, and seperated by a curtain (see photo)

During the busy season the single bathroom may become an issue. Otherwise I think the Alyeska Hostel is an okay choice for a hostel. The cabin is fine if you don't mind the toilet issue. I didn't see the private room. Stayed in June 2007.
