“Good value close to beach”

We stayed at castaway for 5 nights over the new year period. We were basically the only ones there nice room with a small sea view but well appointed. The villas could do with a bit of TLC but in general for the price was good!
Would recommend also the beach outside is swim able but would say turn right out of castaway and less than 5mins is a fantastic area for swimming!

“Wounderful time in Rarotonga”

I WAS NOT SURE OF WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER READING THE REVIEWS ON TRIP ADVISER: But we were pleasantly surprised and pleased when we arrived at the Castaway Resort on September 9th 2011. we stayed in one of the beach front villas for 9days,
It was the most beautiful location with it's own private beach.
We would walk straight out off our room and into the beautiful clear blue water and hand feed the tropical fish. Amazing.....
The lovely people at the castaway were all very welcoming and nothing was a problem.
Some of the rooms were having a make over at the time. Our room was very basic but clean, A little attention to details wouldn't hurt i.e. New curtains and replacing the moldy old cushion on the chairs. The bed were very comfortable.

It would be a good idea to bring ear plugs as the sea is very loud along with the animals but hey this is Raro!
Over all we had a fantastic time loved the people and highly recommend staying here and I would also recommend the 4WD Surfari & Captain Tamas cruises great fun.
So thanks Raro and the Castaway for a great holiday! We will be back.
The best part about staying there is only about 12 rooms so it is very small and private....

Room Tip: Beach front amazing!

“Great little property - under new management”

Castaways has had some bad reviews and when I saw on here before we left that it had gone into recievership I was a little concerned. I shouldn't have been - it is now under new management and even in the week we were there they were sprucing the place up heaps.

Great location, for the most perfect sunsets. Nan (chief cocktail maker) is amazing and will look after you, but watch out for those cocktails - they are strong! She also cooks a mean BBQ, absolutely delicious meals.

Sure there are roosters and dogs everywhere, but they're pretty much everywhere. The dogs are friendly and well looked after. the roosters are LOUD but you do get used to it and after the first night they really didn't bother us.

Rooms are fine, not luxury accommodation but perfectly fine and serviced daily.

If you're the kind of person who wants to stay in the resort the whole trip then I wouldn't recommend staying here, there aren't the same services as the larger resorts, but if you want to explore Raro it's a fantastic base. Good swimming just outside your door, there's a dairy across the street and the beachside deck is just perfect for watching the sun go down, and a whale or 2, if you're lucky!

We stayed in Unit 7, which is a beachside unit, slightly set back from the beach but still a great view.

Really loved this place and we will be back.

“great hotel ,but next door roosters and dogs”

Castaways was nice. the groundsman kept gardens beautifuly manicured. staff friendly.only bones of contention was you need to remind them night before about shuttle to take you to airport, we ended up paying again for a taxi, as we had vouchers but took it for granted that they would remember to pick us up. The room up stairs above office is very noicy due to road traffic. The best accomodation would be the rooms downstairs pool side, which were just lovely, smaller than above unit. but quieter and had patio and we had use of loungers and close to pool. a very tropical setting. good value for money and beach good. nb: bring your ear plugs for rooster and dogs playing.

Room Tip: centre bottom or far rght unit poolside. less noice from road and roosters/dogs

perfect location. impression is that castaway is very understaffed, one lady, ? nan, seemed to be it, arrived at 8am to organise breakfast, then was the only cleaner, arranged the pizza night, was cocktail maker, in fact everything.
our unit 6 was wonderful, very private and safe from the poultry ( everywhere so not good if you have a phobia like i do...). was not the cleanest unit I've stayed in and is showing signs of neglect. it was not ready when we got there at 1.30pm although book in was from 1200. wasnt impressed when receptionist just brought other people into the unit, no knock, just unlocked and came in, then didnt even apologise/explain, just said she thought we were out. had obviously heard my partner organising a tour for that day and presumed I'd gone too. dont think its on to take people thru' your room when you still have all your gear in there etc. found out castaway is in receivership, shame cos it could be really perfect given a bit TLC
