As a frequent traveler to Costa Rica, I have chosen Villa Tournon as my base in San Jose. I knew the original owner, a Dutch expat, who created a nice blend of European and Costa Rican elements for an atmosphere that is comfortable, solid, and still very tropical in feel. It has remained Costa Rican owned and operated and the staff has the wonderful Tico courtesy that endears us to this country. The location near the main highway to the Caribbean makes truck noise inevitable so be prepared and perhaps bring earplugs if this bothers you. (Traffic and street noise is a factor in all downtown hotels.) Entrance to the hotel is on the top (third floor) level and third floor rooms tend to be quieter. Like most downtown hotels, it has a casino and can have a Saturday night party going, but this is definitely not a party hotel. On the contrary, I often find student and church groups checking in and out at reception. The included buffet breakfast is very good - fruit, eggs, sausage, pancakes, toast, and the tasty Tico gallo pinto. The main restaurant offers lunch and dinner service with a fairly standard Costa Rican menu, and if this doesn´t suit, the hotel is only a block and a street crossing away from the restaurants and sodas of El Pueblo Center or a 10-15 minute walk from shopping and cafes in the central city. I have used many hotels in San Jose, but for comfort, location, and good price, the Villa Tournon is hard to beat.
