“Great value and great downtown location”

As a frequent traveler to Costa Rica, I have chosen Villa Tournon as my base in San Jose. I knew the original owner, a Dutch expat, who created a nice blend of European and Costa Rican elements for an atmosphere that is comfortable, solid, and still very tropical in feel. It has remained Costa Rican owned and operated and the staff has the wonderful Tico courtesy that endears us to this country. The location near the main highway to the Caribbean makes truck noise inevitable so be prepared and perhaps bring earplugs if this bothers you. (Traffic and street noise is a factor in all downtown hotels.) Entrance to the hotel is on the top (third floor) level and third floor rooms tend to be quieter. Like most downtown hotels, it has a casino and can have a Saturday night party going, but this is definitely not a party hotel. On the contrary, I often find student and church groups checking in and out at reception. The included buffet breakfast is very good - fruit, eggs, sausage, pancakes, toast, and the tasty Tico gallo pinto. The main restaurant offers lunch and dinner service with a fairly standard Costa Rican menu, and if this doesn´t suit, the hotel is only a block and a street crossing away from the restaurants and sodas of El Pueblo Center or a 10-15 minute walk from shopping and cafes in the central city. I have used many hotels in San Jose, but for comfort, location, and good price, the Villa Tournon is hard to beat.

Room Tip: Superior rooms have two queen beds and are spacious and airy. Ask for the third floor, northside if...

“Functional hotel away from the city centre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The Villa Tournon is out of the City Centre, but within walking distance (10-15minutes).
There were some rooms that were a little tired and worn, but others were much better. We originally had a room at the front of the hotel & it was very noisy (a bar / singing), but the staff were happy to move us to another room.

Breakfast was served in a large dining room, with plenty of fresh fruit, juices, the usual beans & rice, toast, cereal etc. A few coffee addicts we travelled with said the coffee in the rooms was the best they'd had in Costa Rica.

The hotel bar was expensive, but just up the road (turn right out of the hotel & go up the road a little way - max. 3-5mins) on the left is a centre that has good restaurants if you didn't want to eat in the hotel.

The garden is pleasant for a City hotel, with a small pool & hot tub (go looking in the garden for it). There was a safe at reception, so you can go into the City without the worry of carrying all your valuables. Staff were helpful & on the whole friendly.

A reasonably priced city hotel, which is handy for the airport at the beginning & end of your trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room.

Hotel is 10 minutes walk from town based on a noisy road with a casino and night club next door.Be careful when booking rooms that you ask for a quiet room away from noise of loud music in nightclub, ideally at back of hotel.Hotel has a nice pool. Food adequate but not inspiring. Decor is dated beds are very firm

Room Tip: ask for quiet room at back of hotel away from nightclub

“Very noisy and hotel is dated”

We stayed in this hotel at the beginning and end of our Costa Rica Tour. first two nights were adequate but not inspiring, the last night (Friday night) our 'Superior Room' was right on top of the night club/casino and sleep was impossible until 5am!! The superior room had carpet instead of wooden floors which was filthy and the wallpaper was peeling of the wall. A very sad ending to an otherwise really nice holiday we had in Costa Rica.

“Adequate but NOISY”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

We stayed here as part of a mission team. Many groups booked the hotel for one/two night stays - most are teenagers with limited supervision, no manners, and early departures (4am). Two different groups came thru while we were there. In one case, the 17-year-olds partying became so bad, the hotel called the police.

However, the staff is VERY NICE - welcoming and friendly. The rooms were fine - very clean. The beds are hard but OK. Showers have to be coincided with the availability of hot water (on a timer - ask the front desk for the schedule). Bring earplugs and leave your AC fan on to drown out the noise of the teens in the halls. Ask for a room to the left of the elevator on the third floor (ground level). Rooms to the right go toward the Casino. If you are over the casino, your room WILL smell like cigarette smoke.

The breakfast buffet is coffee, juice, scrambled eggs, pancakes, rice and beans, toast, and sausage.
